I used it a couple weeks ago on skype, at home. Brought it into work, ran skype, no video.
Checked device manager, no "imaging devices" but found the camera listed under USB controllers as Sonix ST50220 USB Video Camera.
Quickplay does not recognize it, nor does Skype 4.0 as mentioned before.
Running Vista SP1. Webcam driver is from May 2008.
Help.

Hi,
maybe you solved your problem, but anyway...
I had the same problem. I just updated driver software for "Sonix ST50220 USB Video Camera" to USB Composite Device (vista offered it automatically).
After that vista installed the driver for HP Pavilion Webcam automatically and correctly.
I hope it helps...

Ok, since I figured it out I will answer my own question for others' sake.
Webcam does not show up under "imaging device" in the device manager.
It does show up under USB controllers.
Right clock on webcam and update driver.
Click Browse my computer....
Click Let me pick from a list....
Select "USB Composite Device"
Voila. Works in Quickplay, Skype, etc.
Thanks!

Got the same problem with HP tx1000z. In Windows Update, a new driver for Sonix ST50220 USB Video Camera was listed as optional. After installation the camera stopped working. In Device Manager the driver was listed in the USB Controllers section, not in the Imaging devices section.
My solution was to uninstall the Sonix ST50220 driver (it was version 1.0.0.4) in Device Manager, and to remove the driver completely from system by choosing "Delete the driver for this software" option. There is no need to restart. Just pick "Scan for hardware changes" in Action menu in Device Manager, and the HP Pavilion Webcam is back (listed as Chicony, 9/22/2006, 61.1.0.10, but it is generic Microsoft driver).

Thank you muymal - you solved a problem I have been trying to solve for quite a while. Nothing else worked but this worked perfectly. I never would have thought the webcam was listed under anything but imaging devices.
I had asked for assistance on a Future Shop forum then found your reply and posted it on the Future Shop forum giving the link to this forum and setting out your reply (and giving you credit for it).
Finally a solution that worked. From looking on the internet, this is a common problem but I never saw your solution anywhere else.

Thanks a lot! I was frustrated for several weeks trying to uninstall/install the webcam drivers for my HP pavilon webcam in imaging devices . Even got BSOD's, with Code 0x000000CE and 0X0000000A in the process. I knew it was not a hardware problem, as my webcam was working with windows XP running in a Vmware window. (no, I am still not convinced Vista is better than XP or win2k!) Tonight, I just stumbled on your posts. In two minutes, the probleme was solved, my webcam works again! How come this is not on the HP support site? In any case, many, many thanks!!!! Wished I would have found your post earlier! this would have save me hours of useless search and frustrations! , BTW. this is on a HP pavillon dv9351ea.
