Re: Touch Pad and left click not working

Good luck with this idea, but with this being a common reoccurring problem and you have the classic symptoms of that problem, HP should acknowledge that fact and repair it -- even a year out of warranty -- because it is clearly a common manufacturer's defect in the hardware. I'd tell them to look at their own support forums for how many questions about this come up on this stream and others on their own site if they balk.

It is apparently a hardware problem with no other fix, by my experience, though they will make you try other time-consuming fixes first. Of course, back up everything in duplicate before doing any attempted fixes or shipping it off.

Re: Touch Pad and left click not working

[ Edited ]

I have a dv4 1435dx and the left click button and touch pad went out.  I attempted to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them with no help for the problem.  After seeing all the posts in the forum with people having the same problem with multiple different computers, I would have to say HP NEEDS TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS AND FIX THE PROBLEM WITH NO COST TO THE COMSUMERS.  My computer is 120 days out of warranty and a HP supervisor stated to me that the cost to fix the computer would be mine and would be over $250.00 at minimum.  WOW the computer cost me $750.00 and now I have to pay this cost, this is B.S.  The supervisor also stated that there were no recalls for my specific computer so HP would not fix the problem at their costs.  Well OK are the same parts used in multiple different computers so HP uses the excuse because there are not enough complaints on specific models a recall will not be made.  I have over the past 15 years always purchased HP products......THIS WILL BE MY LAST!!!!!!!!!! If this does not get fixed by HP

HP if you want to talk again call me or e-mail me here is the case # - 7501754902

supervisor's Tx# I spoke with - 877-917-4380 x93

Re: Touch Pad and left click not working

Your post is the most recent I could find I'll respond to it , I have a dv6 I have sent it in twice and they have replaced mother board key board touch pad and some other stuff that i don't know what it is seemto work fine for afew days after i got it back the last time after a week left button highlighting draging and multiple clicking on anything I click. The additional problem I am having is that my arrows will cause the a back page or forward page as well as my back space key back page when correcting text which i loose in both cases.

My laptop is almost unusable external mouse has the same problems. Searching the web will show you this is a common problem with just about any brand with the touch pad. many are able to get around it if their laptop has double set of buttons and they can swith to upper set. Nothing fixes it as far as software issue so don't even try it is a waste of your time . I am sending mine back  for a third time. I cannot do anything myself as it would void warranty and I don't want to just change out parts hopeing it will fix it  which is evidently what they hve been doing. I assume at this point there is no fix and the cause is unknown.

If anyone has a legitamate fix please post it, nothing I have come across works to actually fix it and evidently niether has warranty service.

Re: Touch Pad and left click not working

I am extremely disappointed with my Pavilion dv4.  It's battery was gone exactly after 1 year!!  And, whenever there are some huge updates from MS Windows, some of the laptop's hardwares will give problem. 2 months ago after a Windows update, my USB and figerprint reader completely stopped working - my CD/DVD drive is permanently giving problems after that update.

Now This time, suddenly touchpad's left click button and the tap stopped working!! Some technician told me that my touchpad is gone and I need to replace it. But, my question is - how can left button of the touchpad, and the tap (that act as a left click) both stopped working at a same time!!! IT's JUST A $900 JUNK PIECE NOW!! So frustrated!!

Re: Touch Pad and left click not working

I have a problem just like this on an HP8440p. Left mouse button not working. Right working fine.

It seems like the left button is jammed on and thats why clicks don't work. At startup sometimes I notice a selection box being drawn by the mouse like I'm holding the button down.

I spoke with HP and they said to turn it off, unplug from AC, remove battery then hold the power button for 10 seconds. Then leave it like this for 10 minutes.

Reassemble and power on. This seemed to fix it for the last week but today it has just failed again.

It also doesn't work in our preboot encryption screen. It makes me think it's a hardware problem which the power drain fixes temporarily.

Looks like another call to HP to get this laptop changed/repaired.

Re: Touch Pad and left click not working

Just tried a bootable USB disk with a copy of linux on it. The mouse button works in that.

It's not a Windows driver thing or the preboot encryption would work. Also it's not a physical hardware thing or linux wouldn't work.

I have another HP 8440p here. I'll swap the hard drives over and see if it's the specific laptop or the software install.

Re: Touch Pad and left click not working

OK. The drive in a different laptop works fine. Put it back in the original laptop and it doesn't work again. Definitely related to the laptop not the software install.

Re: Touch Pad and left click not working

Hi, I had this problem too. My left click stopped working. I was not able to use the left click on the touchpad either. I had reinstalled the driver, I tried almost anything. But than I found this one simple solution. I grabbed a paper clip, or anything that is thin and durable and i lifted the left click with it, and i blew air in there to blow away the dust. Than I pressed it back a bit harder. Now my left click works again. I guess that some dust was there and probably that stopped the left click from working.

This is something that worked for me and I dont guarantee that is gonna work for everyone else, but its worth a try.
