In the end, they changed the touchpad, keyboard and mainboard. The issue seems to have gone away now

touch pad left click does not highlight a word or sentence so that I can copy it, nor can I left click on my ym messenger screen and move it or resize it or move icons on my desktop. had a system factory restore done but didn't fix the problem

I see this post is about two years old, but here I am having the exact same problem ![]()
My left click button does not work and neither does the tap-to-click on my touchpad. My laptop is a 6730s notebook and is more than two years ago, so the warranty has worn off, and the problem started just two days ago.
I tried switching between left and right mouse button and the clicking works but the right-click (now left-click) stops working. An external mouse works perfectly fine, but it's so annoying to have to bring that everywhere.
Has anyone found any other way to fix this than sending the laptop back? It really surprises me that HP has been ignoring this problem for two years when it seem to be pretty normal.
Anyways, if anyone have the slightest clue of how to help this problem please tell ![]()

The problem was fixed for me by HP. The last thing they did was change the motherboard. before this, they changed the trackpad twice. when you boot into windows, is it like the left click is locked on? Do you get the selection rectangle when you move the mouse (before you click at all)? These were the symptoms of the laptop I was looking at.

Yes, I had that too.
BUT, I have actually gotten it to work! I tried what someone wrote on page 3 (on this post):
"I spoke with HP and they said to turn it off, unplug from AC, remove battery then hold the power button for 10 seconds. Then leave it like this for 10 minutes.
Reassemble and power on. "
This actually worked for me! So people, if you have this problem, before sending it in or speaking with HP, try unplugging your laptop from power, take out the battery, press the ON button for 10 seconds, wait 10 minutes, turn it back on.
This has worked for my HP laptop for over a week!
Good luck with yours

None of the simple tricks worked for me, I had to replace the button circuit board which is part # LS-4104P on my DV4 1430us.
The touchpad wiring goes through the button board then up to the mother board, so if the left button craps out then the touchpad tapping goes with it. At least that's my theory.
I bought a used button board several months ago and it didnt fix it, so I left it alone. Last week I convinced myself that this was a hardware issue and the used button board was a dud, so I bought a NEW one and eveything is working as it should.

Hello Dash65,
I understand your touchpad left mouse button does not work nor does the double click, is that correct? I will do what I can to assist you.
If you have replaced the pad and it still does not work, it sounds like an issue with connections on the board, not working properly.
Do you know if you are still covered by any warranty? If you are not sure have a look at the HP warranty checker tool, it will verify for you.
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.
Thanks

Hi
I am not under warranty. It appears to be driver/software related as the left mouse button and mousepad tap/double tap do not work however if I disable the mousepad buttons in settings the mousepad tap/doubletap works again. This sounds the same as many others are experiencing.I replaced the entire mousepad/laptop cover with a brand new part and it is still thre same. The board connection looked OK.
