USB connections not working but no error messages

Pavilion DM3T-1000 laptop, Windows7 (64 bit), 18 months old (custom ordered the first day announced).  BIOS & all software updated.  I've used an external (powered) USB hub for keyboard, mouse, DVD drive for 6 months.

This morning, nothing connected to the hub would work.  I connected them directly to each of the 4 USB hubs on the laptop, same result (can't access the DVD drive, darn).  I downloaded the chipset driver (does that control the USB gear?) and tried to install it but it aborted with the message that the computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software.  I downloaded the prior version and got the same message.

I also ran diagnostics (F2 at start-up) and all worked successfully.

I hope that it's a software problem but can't identify or fix it.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Re: USB connections not working but no error messages

Try going to device manager (Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager. )

and then click the + next to universal serial bus controllers and right clicking on each one then click uninstall.

After uninstalling all of them reboot and let it reinstall the usb drivers.

Re: USB connections not working but no error messages

If by "reinstall the USB drivers" you mean the "chipset" drivers; I tried but have been unable to install them.

Re: USB connections not working but no error messages

The USB drivers are different from chipset drivers.... u'll not need to install them yourself... they'll be installed AUTOMATICALLY when you will restart the computer.

Re: USB connections not working but no error messages

Try this

  • In Device Manager, click your computer so that it is highlighted.
  • Click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
  • Check the USB device to see whether it is working.
  •

    and this:

click Start, and then use the Start Search box.

  • Type regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor opens.
  • Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB
  • If the DisableSelectiveSuspend registry entry is present, double-click it. If it is not present, create the entry. To create the entry, follow these steps:
    1. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD.
    2. Type DisableSelectiveSuspend, and then press ENTER.
    3. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  • In the Value data field, type 1 to disable the Selective Suspend feature, and then click OK.
