VGA to TV out on a HP G50-123NR laptop?

[ Edited ]

Does this laptop really support TV-out through the VGA port if attached to a TV using a cable like this?

http://www.mcbworld.com/mcbworld/laptop-svideo-rare-adapter-cable-p-148.html

HP tech support keeps telling me that it does support TV-out, but I've had absolutely no luck with it.

If I connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port and then clone displays or extend the desktop to the second monitor, it works perfectly fine.

But if I plug in an NTSC TV (computer VGA port ->adapter cable -> TV video in), it just shows an unintelligible mass of video distortion.

This leads me to believe that the computer is putting out a non-compatible VGA signal to the TV.

If anybody knows how to get the TV to work with the VGA output, I would greatly appreciate the info.

Thanks!

If you are going to a regular TV, you are going to need to set the resolution quite low, as a tv cannot handle the resolution that a monitor can. Try it on 640 x 480 first, and see if it will work that way. If it does, you can then fine tune it to the best picture.

Thanks for your reply, ComputerzEast.

Yes, I knocked the TV resolution all the way down to 640x480 (even though this TV has worked at higher resolutions with other laptops) with a 60 hz refresh rate and 16 bit color. It still shows the same static.

Here is an image of what the TV picture looks like:

Marcus, any luck with this? I'm having the same problem but with a DV3-1075CA.

Nope!  I ended up having to buy a VGA toS-video converter like this one.

HP tech support was absolutely no help on this.  They just kept insisting that the VGA port was putting out S-video, even though it clearly isn't.
