Where can i find sata driver for HP pav dv6663 us p/nGY140UA#ABA

My hard drive is not recognized in Bios. I've discovered that the driver that is needed to recognize my sata hard drive is missing. I have searched everywhere for this driver but Im not exactley sure what Im looking for. I need to know the manufacturer for my motherboard HP PAVILION DV 6663US p/n GY140UA #ABA . Forgive me as I am a NOOB. This seems like it should be an easy find but for me it is not. Any direction would be greatly appriciated. Thanks again.

Hi:

Everyone is a NOOB at one time or another. There is nothing to be sorry for, or to forgive.

We all learn as we go...

OK, your notebook has the nVidia chipset, and from what I understand there are no SATA AHCI drivers necessary in order to install XP or any ohter operating system for that matter.

Please read this guide at the link below, and focus on the section labeled  Ad C.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and/SATA-drivers-for-XP-solution-on-0x000000...

There may be something there that will help you out of your dilemma--especially if you are installing a very old version of windows XP.

Re: Where can i find sata driver for HP pav dv6663 us p/nGY140UA#ABA

Wow thanks for the quick response. It seems that Im way off the path. I should have started from the beginning. My HP pavilion DV 6663 recently showed a screen statiing: "Operating system not found" when I tried to boot it up. I tried a number of recovery softwares and I was able to boot from disk but I just kept getting an error stating "Root .exe cannot be found" or something like that.

I decided to try and use my other 2.5" sata HD in the HP just to see if that would work and it booted up. After doing some research I decided to purchase a sata HD docking station to try and see if I could retrieve any of my files instead of giving up and purchasing a new HD. I used the docking station and sure enough my backups were still on there so I backed them up on my other PC. I also wiped and reformated the HD in hopes of reinstalling Windows 7. I put the HD back in the HP pav 6663 and tried to boot with disk and I get a little ways into instalition and it says "Select the driver to be installed" To install the device driver needed to access your hard drive, insert the installation media containing the driver files".

Is my hard drive toast. Its still accessable in the dock. Can I somehow install windows to a hard drive in a docking station (then put it back in to the HP and boot)? Or put the HP in another comp and intall from there.

So I dont know if I in fact need "Drivers" or if somehow my OS files were corrupted by a virus. IDK

Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Re: Where can i find sata driver for HP pav dv6663 us p/nGY140UA#ABA

You're very welcome.

I wish I had an answer for you but I am not sure on this one.

Normally when you get those install a device driver notes when installing W7 or Vista, it is due to when someone buys the software online from the microsoft store, downloads the OS installation file, burns it to a DVD and the burn is bad.

This is not the case (at least as far as I know), when one uses an installation disk that came out of a Microsoft retail box full or upgrade version or OEM version.

So, if by chance you are trying to install W7 using a disk you burned yourself, try burning the ISO file to another DVD, and burn it at the slowest possible speed you can burn it at.

Additionally, go into the BIOS and run the HDD test.  From what you have posted, I don't think the HDD is bad.

Windows 7 does not need any additional files to install on your model PC. That, I guarantee.

It has all the SATA drivers, etc., that are necessary.

Re: Where can i find sata driver for HP pav dv6663 us p/nGY140UA#ABA

Its just strange that the HD is useable in my dock on my other comp. but when I have it in the HP this is what is happening.  http://www.windowsreinstall.com/win7ultimate/nohddinstallguide/indexfullpage.htm

Ive tried a purchased copy of 7 and Vista. It seems that there is a lot of info out there about this that keeps bringing me back to the motherboard driver and possibly changing the settings in my bios to IDE instead of achi.

Anyhow thanks for taking a look at this. Maybe somebody else might have some input.

Re: Where can i find sata driver for HP pav dv6663 us p/nGY140UA#ABA

You're very welcome.

I wish I had a definite answer for you.

I have basically the same model notebook as you do -- a dv6810us. Same guts inside.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01391847&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...

I had zero problems installing Vista 32 bit or W7 64 bit using the installation DVD's.

It may be a motherboard issue. Our PC's are prone to some serious motherboard issues, but I have not heard any reports of the drive controller going out.

GPU's and wireless is what is normally affected.

Good luck. I hope you can get it sorted out.

Re: Where can i find sata driver for HP pav dv6663 us p/nGY140UA#ABA

It is possible for a drive to be accessible as a data drive and yet be unuseable for a boot drive. The special sectors on the hard drive that contain the table of contents (Master Boot Record) can get whacked and corrupted. If I understand correctly you have no issues with this laptop if you use a drive other than the original? When you try to reload an OS to the original you get Windows 7 calling for a SATA driver? I would do a complete low level format (zero fill) on the drive. Use a little tool called dban. You can download an .iso of it here:

http://www.dban.org/

Run this overnight on the original drive then try to load the OS and see if you get anywhere.

Re: Where can i find sata driver for HP pav dv6663 us p/nGY140UA#ABA

Well I d/l Dban and burnt to iso. Tried to boot HP with disk and for some reason I cannot get it to boot. Put it # 1 in bios boot order. So I decided to try and install the HD(1) in my other laptop(2) an wipe it. Then I installed & it worked. (So its not the HD(1))  Then I decided to put the HD(2) (from laptop 2) in the HP(1). It is now recognizing it in Bios but I cant get 7 to install via cd boot. It still doesnt give me that boot option. So i tried usb. It recognizes that and starts to run. Sometimes it will stop responding after the start screen, other times it will go all the way til select a install destination,  I select the HD and then it stops responding and show diagonal lines.

I swear this laptop just doesnt want to be fixed. its as if it will let me get soooo close but then it decides to say sorry try again. The strange thing is i purchased a brand new seagate 360gb hd and it lets me install and run 7 just fine. I would just like to use one of the HDs I already have so I can just return the seagate. Sorry I know its a little confusing. There seems to be now rhyme or reason as to why both HDs works one one computer but not the HP. Only a BRAND NEW HD will let me install OS normally. Is something wrong with my motherboard? Or some drivers or something?
