Where to get a guide to replace hard drive for Pavillion dv6-1330sl? I have SMART Hard Disk Error

Dear users,

I have a problem with my HP Notebook Pavillion dv6-1330sl.

After 2 yeras of perfect working I got now a message at startup:

SMART Hard Disk Error Hard Disk 1 (301).

Browsing on www I understood that I need to replace my hard drive (even if all diagnostic are passing the test).

Does anybody have a guide for replacement and expecially how to restore the content of my previous disk once I have replaced the disk?

Hi,

Smart errors are a indication that the drive is failing or is likely to fail in the near future - make sure you back-up all your personal files etc as soon as possible, then replace the HDD.

The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 54 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.

Once done, simply use your Recovery DVDs to reinstall the Operating System on the new drive - they will also reinstall all the original software bundled with your notebook as well as re-creating the Recovery Partition on the new HDD.

It's pretty straight forward and one of the few things that's easier to replace on a notebook than it is on a desktop (since there are no cables to connect and disconnect).

As for getting your data off the old hard drive, one thing you could try is before you replace the hard drive, try to boot off a linux distro that boots from a CD/DVD or flash drive such as Ubuntu and try to transfer the files to an external device.  The reason I  recommend that first is cause it's free so it's worth a shot.  Failing that, you may want to look at 3rd party solutions.

Component replacement procedures can be found in Chapter 4.

You are going to need a set of recovery disks for your PC, unfortunately, I do not see any available.

I recommend you call HP for the country you live in at the link below and see if a set of recovery disks are available.

Otherwise you will need to purchase a full retail or OEM copy of Windows 7.

Another thing you can try is to use the Windows 7 Backup and recovery program and save an image of your hard drive to a portable hard drive, and create a Windows 7 startup boot CD.

Perhaps you can use that to restore your current operating system and files onto a new hard drive.
