I have a DV4000 (dv4269us) with the 1.73GHz Pentium M 740. It's currently got 2GB RAM installed, and the f.03 BIOS (initial BIOS)
Two Three One remaining questions:Will I be able to install a 1.73GHz Pentium Dual Core t2080 in this computer? I know the two CPUs are the same physical socket, but will the chipset and BIOS support it properly? This is not possible due to Intel 965 chipset support requirment for the newer CPU, 915 based chipsets can not support the new chips.
UPDATE: Verified this with another PC Tech.
Will a newer BIOS support 3GBs RAM? I have a 2GB PC2-5300 to replace one of the two 1GB PC2-5300 modules.
This is a limitation of the 915 chipset. Howerver there are rumors that some BIOS versions for some specific 915 extensions can allow more than 2GBs RAM.
UPDATE: Installed f.21 BIOS, computer fails to initialize when more than 2GBs of RAM is installed. 2GB - video is max limit of usable RAM on the DV4269us at f.03 and f.21 BIOS levels.
I currently have ubuntu linux installed on it, and so can not easily install the new BIOS updates. I would like to know if it is worth my while to do so for either question above. I would be exstatic if I would be able to upgrade both the CPU and RAM.
I have *potentially* found a way to install the BIOS without messing with my harddrive or OS, so I will be doing this.
UPDATE: I used "XPUSB" (A BartPE derived "LiveWindows" for a USB thumb drive) to install the BIOS updates. This went off without a hitch. (other than XPUSB being in German) I used a 256MB thumb drive, and had plenty of room left over for the BIOS update. I'm sure you can find it somewhere if you're desperate enough! ![]()
Also, one additional question; Is there an upgrade for the mini-PCI intel 2200bg wifi card? I would like to upgrade to an 802.11n adapter, if possible.
This is still a question I would like answered. I have found some Wireless-N miniPCI cards, but am certain the HP BIOS on the laptop will reject them due to not being HP branded. Help?
Finding information this detailed online for this specific laptop is less than fruitful. I appreciate ANY help you can give, and will use the Kudos buttons for good replies!
I hope my 6 hours of research and testing has helped out others. I know I seem to have answered all of my questions here, with the exception of the miniPCI card (though I'm guessing it's a safe bet to assume that the miniPCI slot is locked to only HP branded cards, and newer cards aren't set for the older laptops) Please let me know if I'm wrong on that!
Thank You,
AeSix
