dv6700nr failed cd drive - roxio burning software problem?

Wondered if anyone else with a dv6700 series notebook had their cd drive fail right before/after the warranty ran out? A friend bought the identical machine with me and *his* cd drive failed also - yes, an external drive works & had it serviced - tech spoke of "cd bus" not working (though the drive powers up fine). I found it odd that 2 machines had the same problem.....I rarely used the drive, and believe the failure was related to the installation/removal of Roxio burning software.

I don't want to replace the drive if this is a generic issue - didn't make it to the store bfore the warranty expired.

This machine also goes into sleep mode permanently (until battery pulled out)  but this is software related & after upgrade to windows 7 should be fine.

I generally appreciate HP products and otherwise have been satisfied with the machine.
