I have a hp pavilion dv 6646us notebook. After downloading Vista updates my computer loses the dvd drive. I have already fixed it twice using the suggestions of deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry. I have been to Microsoft's Mr. Fix It. I have tried to recover from an earlier date, but the dates are not before the problem. I think I deleted the wrong registry. I purchased a replacement DVD drive from HP, and I received it today hoping the computer would read the new drive. No such luck. There is no listing of a dvd drive;optical drive; etc. in my device manager. When I try to download drivers I am told that there is no outlet for that drive. I can't even use my DVD's to restore. I can't boot from a dvd. Everything on my computer is updated. It has never run better other than the missing dvd problem. Any suggestions?

Am sad to say that I'm in the same boat... along with my brother in law. W both have HP Pavilion DV6000 AMD based laptops and both our DVD's have gone AWOL for about a month now. What he did was buy an external DVD Drive so I borrowed his to boot up and reinstall my OS (Which is still Vista btw).
Short Story is Reg Fix doesnt work, reinstalled Vista and still wont work, won't even boot up to a OS CD from an external drive. So I'm stuck to using an external drive that I can't boot up to that shows up everytime I start windows, while my internal DVD drive though physically working (I hope since it still ejects and lights up everytime I push the buttons) is nowhere to be seen. And on another note, my boot time from the moment the HP logo appears to the time the black window with the bars show has increased dramatically).

I had a problem with the system not finding a TSSTCORP TS-H653L dvd drive and the following fixed it.
save this file on your desktop: http://docxp.mvps.org/b1n/DisparitionCD.inf and then right-click on it then click install and restart your pc as.
This avoids the in the register and it works even for vista.

Absolutely no Solution to problem other than purchasing an external optical drive or another laptop.
Total reinstall of Windows Vista or Windows 7 will not show a CD Drive in My Computer. No drives available to upload. A purchase and install of another internal drive will not help either.

I'm having the same problem on my dv2000 notebook. havetried every fix I could find, sometimes it will come back for a little while but it never lasts more than a few minutes. My brother in law works on pcs, he said its a flaw in the motherboard and theres no fix. He told me to buy an external drive. hoping he's wrong, still looking for a solution.

I found out that intel has changed some things and it doesnt seem compatible with windows.
Full reinstall of original factory settings (yes destructive) and with the windows updates, the drive has disappeared again.
first i installed this
then looked at this, but it doesnt apply to my comp
I have an HP Pavilion Mediacentre PC 7775.uk-a
