Well, I can try to help you the best I can. When you said that your Laptop worked perfect until 6 months ago and you tell me that your optical drive, which is either a CD drive or DVD/CDRW drive won't open, it could be one of two things. It could either be faulty, which means that it can be connected properly to the laptop's motherboard and not get any power, or it could have power but be faulty because it is stuck from opening. When you start your computer, the LED on it should light up, if it does but won't open, then it definitely needs replaced. It could also have lost it's connection to the connector to the motherboard. How to check it, you have to do this very carefully, you have to carefully take it apart and check to see if it's properly connected to it's connector, if it is and still not getting power, it definitely needs replaced. Just look up a exact replacement for your exact model. That's what I think it is. Anyway, I would have it checked out, but that's more than likely what it is. I have been working with desktops and laptops for about 4 years and I've ran into this problem more than once. Anyway, I hope this helps.

If this doesn't help, it could also be the CD/DVD Drive controller that's faulty on the motherboard, then may have to use an external CD/DVD drive. If you don't want to go that route, I would suggest a motherboard replacement. This is just my opinion. I hope it helps.
