my dvd rom can read dvd, but not cd

I have a HP Compaq nx6110 notebook. I recently re-installed Windows XP Professional and after the installation my notebook is unable to read cd's, it can only read DVD's. it doesn't even want to read the instalation cd that i used to install XP with. It doesn't give me any error message, just acts if nothing is in the dvd rom drive
