my screen is black on bootup. no bios. no beeps. external monitor doesn't work either.

I have a G62-343NR that suddenly stopped working after I tried to do a Windows update.  Right now, when I try to turn it on, I will hear the fans whirring, and the HD kicking on, but there are no beeps & my screen stays black.  The wifi light stays on, but my Caps Lock button flashes on and off.  I thought the screen might have went bad, but when I hook up my external monitor, it doesn't show anything either.  I've tried inserting a Windows 7 install disc, but nothing shows up on the screen, and no beeps are heard.  The fan is on though.  

 

Any ideas or solutions?

 

It was running Windows 7.

Hi,

 

Try a Hard Reset as follows.

 

Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and see if the notebook will start.

 

If the notebook still doesn't start, can you match the sequence of LED 'Blinks' to those shown in the table below?

HI, thanks for replying so quick.  

 

I did the hard reset as instructed, but it still doesn't boot.  

 

As far as the blinks go, i'm not sure if it's supposed to blink over and over.  The F12 button stays lit orange, but the Caps Lock button blinks continuously.  On further inspection, the Caps Lock blinks once, off for 2 secs, blinks again, off for 5 secs.  Then it starts the cycle over again.  Not sure if that means 2 blinks or not.

I just noticed something different now.  It'll do the the blink twice, off for 5 secs, and blink twice again for a good 4-5 times, then it'll just blink once and off for 7-8 secs, and blink once again.  Then it'll just keep blinking like that until I turn it off again.

Hi,

 

It does look like some component on the motherboard has failed, but it's worth trying the following.

 

With reference to the link below, remove one of your memory modules and then see if the notebook will boot.  If it doesn't, try the same module, but in the other slot.  If is still doesn't boot, try just the other memory module in both slots, to see if any combination will allow the notebook to start.

 

The procedure for removing these modules is detailed starting on Page 55 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.

Thats awesome!  One of the memory chips was bad i guess.  I took one out like you said and it booted right up!  Thank you so much!

Hi,

 

You're welcome and good to hear it's now booting :smileyhappy:

 

It's probably is a bad module, but just to be certain I would recommend try the module that you now is OK in the other available slot and check if the notebook still boots just to rule out a problem with the slot itself.
