new pavilion win 7, 64, not recognizing canon pixma mp780 multifunction printer?

I have a new Pavilion Dual Core AMD, Win 7, 64bit notebook.  After a Windows install of the driver for a Canon Pixma MP780, I get a repeated message that the printer is offline......which it is not!  I have performed numerous restarts as well as replaced the USB cable.  Any suggestions?  Any known glitches with this Multifunction Printer?  Thanks
