processor speed

hi,

i have an hp pavilion zv5000 with an amd athlon xp 3000+ processor. if i am correct the processor should read around

3000mhz or less but t is only reading at 797mhz. can someone enlighten me on this topic or help in speeding up this

processor.

It is not a 3 ghz processor. In the day, AMD named its processors by the equivalent Intel processor so an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ was equal to a P4 3.0 processor. That was actually true, but the AMD clock speed was closer to 1.8 or 2 ghz. You are seeing AMD Power Now! which slows down the processor to save battery life. On desktops it was called Cool 'n Quiet but the principle is the same. If you want it to go all out all the time change the power options to "always on" which takes away the "speedstepping" function, but will not give you any better performance, really. Power Now! will speed up the processor in a nano second to meet any demands you put on it.

so could you tell me how to speed up this computer without spending a whole lot of money or should i invest in a new laptop. i do have 2gb of ram that i will be installing as soon as i receive them. hoping that might help a little.

You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The best thing to do to speed it up is a wipe and reload of the operating system.

Use a lightweight antivirus like Avira or Avast, not AVG or Norton's and keep the startup routine very lean. It will take 2 gigs of RAM. One module goes under the keyboard. New laptops are so much faster and better now you might want to consider it.
