"Fan Always On" in BIOS and Windows 7

Windows 7 on a Mini 311

If I set "Fan Always On" to "Disabled" in the BIOS, the following condition happens...

Power Settings = Balanced

If I close the lid, the Mini sleeps.  When I open the lid, the Mini wakes up for about a second and then hibernates (power off).  I then press the power button and it resumes from hibernation.  If I choose sleep from the Start menu and do not close, the lid, the Mini sleeps and wakes up from sleep fine without going into hibernation.

If I go back into the BIOS and set "Fan Always On" back to "Enabled" the above problem with lid open from sleep going right into hibernation goes away.

This seems like it's a hardware issue (BIOS related).  Has anyone else run into it?

Re: "Fan Always On" in BIOS and Windows 7

I was running XP and encountered the exact same problem.   When I reported it to HP, they thought that it was a hardware problem, so I've sent in my Mini 311 and am getting a replacement.

I've recently seen a review of the Mini 311 (dated 11/6/09) which indicates that this is a known problem.  Unfortunately, it was not known by the HP tech that I talked to on 11/4.  Oh, well.  When I get the new Mini 311, I think that I'm going to leave the BIOS fan setting enabled.

Do you have the references of the review where this problem is mentionned?

Thank you and best regards :smileyhappy:

Bonjour NJDave,

Thank you for the reference. :smileyhappy:

It seems the French hp support still ignores that problem! :smileysad:

Best regards,

I am experiencing the exact same issue with my brand new HP Mini 311 with 3gb RAM, N280 processor.

Re: "Fan Always On" in BIOS and Windows 7

I just updated the BIOS to F4 and the problem appears to be fixed.

[ Edited ]

I think I spoke too soon.  It appears the problem is intermittent.  It happens less often in the default Power Saver option.  I was told by HP Support that the new BIOS would correct the problem - but they were wrong.
