replace BIOS chip in Pavilion dv6000

Hi,

A friend of mine tried to upgrade the BIOS in her Pavilion DV6000. It failed and the laptop is now a brick. I've spent ages searching and tried all sorts of resets. Nothing is working. The screen is completely blank but the LEDs light up.

What I would like to know is this: Is the BIOS chip soldered on to the motherboard ? or is it in a socket ?

I have found a few places that will fix/replace broken BIOS chips for about $30. If the chip is replaceable I would like to do that.

If not then I would need to replace the motherboard, which would probably not be worthwhile.

 Look forward to a reply

William

Re: replace BIOS chip in Pavilion dv6000

I had a bad flash with my Dv6000 a few months ago. I did a tremendous amount of research. Yes, the chip is soldered to the motherboard. I bought a replacement chip that was pre-programmed that I was going to install myself. It turns out that the chip is tiny with about 40 pins to solder that you can barely see.

I paid $30 for the chip.. if you can find an place to do the repair for that price I'd make sure they know what they were doing. I ultimately paid a shop to do the repair and it was about $100.

Re: replace BIOS chip in Pavilion dv6000

I spent quite a bit of time researching these BIOS chips when mine failed. I guess it depends on which model you have. They came with two different types of BIOS chips. One is a 40 pin and the other is an 8 pin. I believe the models in the DV6000 thru DV6200 are the 40 pin and the DV6300  and up are the 8 pin chips.  I don't know the numbers on the chips, you'll need to contact a professional for that info. I used aqstech.com they were top notch.

Re: replace BIOS chip in Pavilion dv6000

Removing and resoldering of BIOS chip in any motherboard is not for end users. You can swap the BIOS chip if it is on a socket.

.

Therefore, it is not advisable to replace your BIOS chip ( soldered down ) in the motherboard. You will do damage than good for your PC.

Re: replace BIOS chip in Pavilion dv6000

I think if the alternative is to throw the laptop out, because the repair cost more than the laptop is worth, it isadvisable to try and replace the chip.

It all depends. There are plenty of tutorials on youtube.

I am faced with either fixing a 2 year old Compaq laptop that cost $400, motherboard cost is $200. Not worth it when much better laptops can be had for $350.
