Hi, I have a HP probook 4421s OS: windows 7 home premium 640GB 7200RPM hardrive. About 13 months old. 3 years onsite warranty.
A few days ago, it was working fine when suddenly it hangs and i was unable to navigate anything. i waited some time for it to recover, long enough that it made me decide to take out the battery and start the laptop again. Then i launched the start up repair, it failed to fix the problem and it takes forever to log into windows , when i do log into windows, everything is so slow and it take forever to do anything, it will just stuck at a item (say maybe clicking the start button) forever.
I had restart the laptop to repair/start windows normally for numerous times the past days, and it worked yesterday. i used ctrl alt del to end task running at windows start up and everything went back to normal, but it didn't last long. The problem came back when i was shutting down the laptop, the screen showing "shutting down" takes forever to run (1-2hrs), then i decide to take out the battery again. And the same old problem came back.
I launched start up repair over and over and the message "start up repair cannot repair this computer automatically" came out.
What am i to do now? and what does the 3 years onsite warranty includes? i've checked hp web but the information provided is too vague. I've called the technical support hotline but i couldn't get the information needed (i don't understand what the robot is saying!) I'm not a IT savvy person, please help. Thank you very much. Really appreciated any help/advice given.

If you can boot Windows, go to a command line and type sfc /scannow. Let it run to completion. That is the builtin system file checker.

This is where you should be downloading drivers and software for your HP ProBook 4421s notebook.
Have you installed the Operating System - Enhancements and QFEs for your notebook? There is one in particular called Essential System Updates for Windows 7 that you should install.
Have you ever cleared the temp folder in the operating system?
Go to the Search Programs and files box and type %tmp%. The temp folder will open. Delete everything in the folder that you can. You won't be able to delete them all, but that is not a problem. A few files/folders will still be in use by the operating system. Every item in the folder is a temporary file or folder and can be safely deleted without any negative effects to the operating system.
After you have cleared your temp folder there is another item you should take care of. That item is refreshing your virtual memory (Swap) file. Follow the instructions in the following video. Once you have the virtual memory file set up tgere will probably be a restart of the operating system required.
That should do it. Your notebook's operating system should be quick again. If your operating system is still slow and unresponsive after doing the items I have recommended, then it is time to save all of your data (emails, photos and music) to an external disk and use the HP recovery media to recover your PC to its delivered state.

Hey erico, i finally got to the command prompt. I typed sfc/scannow, it shows a message "you must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility" . What do i do now? Thank you.

Click on the Windows orb. select All Programs and then double click on Accessories. Right click on command prompt and select run as administrator. You may have to enter your administrator user password. Once you have done that you can type in sfc /scannow and press the enter key.

Hi erico! my laptop is better now though not as quick as it was before. Thanks for helping. May i know what does the drivers and software download you recommended above does? (i have no idea what is it)
i had downloaded the windows essential that you've mentioned, but i am not sure whether i've done it right. i downloaded it, and then it was saved in the downloads folder, i clicked on it and then clicked repair and it ended. i am not sure whether it has done anything to my system.

That software and drivers link was for in future in case you needed updated drivers.

It should have run just like a normal executable file. If you did the clearing temp folders and files it should be faster.
