I attempted to install an Intel Ultimate-N 6300 a/b/g/n wireless card in my new dv7-6195us and when booting, BIOS states the card is not supported and to remove the card and reboot the system. Is there a reason I cannot install this card? What wireless a/b/g/n cards does this system support? I would like to use the 5ghz band and the Intel 1000 card that came with the system only supports 802.11n over 2.4ghz ONLY. Please advise.

I followed your recommendations and I purchased and installed an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 mini WLAN card and it also did not work. I got the same boot error saying the system does not support the device and to remove it and reboot. How do I solve this issue? Seems that any card installed is getting this error.

None of these suggestions worked either. I spoke with technical support at HP and determined that only a handfull of wireless cards work with the dv7-6000 series models and an even SMALLER amount work with the dv7-6000 series laptops using INTEL processors. The Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 that you previously suggested ONLY works with AMD processor models only. Surprisingly, the list of supported wireless cards for Intel processors does NOT include any Intel products. I am very angry that I am not allowed to install the card of my choice in my own laptop! The rep suggested that I use the Broadcom 4313 card (HP Part Number 593836-001) which is apprently the only one that supports 5ghz. So out of all the products in the world, I can use ONE card in this system to get 5ghz support. I may have to return this computer, this is ridiculous. Thank you for your help, NO HELP FROM HP!

No, this issue is not resolved. The product number that they have listed in the replacement parts manual for the Intel 6230 is not correct. People are ordering this product by product number and receiving an RALink card which does not work. HP refuses to correct the problem. This has been a long standing issue for many many unhappy HP customers. I have submitted the dv7-6195us BIOS and vendor/device ID of the stock WLAN card to our friends at Bios-mods.com to remove the whitelist from this bios so that way we can all install whatever cards we would like. If you are going to install 3x3 WLAN device, you will need to install another antenna inside the chassis which is fairly easy to do. Cheap antennas can be purchased for about $2.50 at amazon.com. I would advise you to submit a bios whitelist request for your particular model at bios-mods.com.

The secret that HP won't tell you is that they have built in white list of WiFi cards built in the BIOS. So if you install a card that's not on the white list it will be shut down and you get the error.
There are two ways around this.
1. Shut down the machine, unplug from power, take out the battery, unplug all devices from the laptop, wait couple of minutes, and then start the machine running on battery.
Once it boots up you can reconnect power and anything you had connected before, or
2. Install modified BIOS where the white list was removed.
HP used to be the worst company who hindered do it itself component upgrades by rivetting components so you could not replace things like HD's DVD ROM's etc.. They got away from that nowadays, but they still do this crap.

I had success installing the modified BIOS from bios-mods.com. I was able to install my Intel 6230 with no issues. I have a 6300 as well but I need to pick up another antennae to use with 3x3 router, so far now the 2x2 6230 does the job. I'm now getting anywhere from 7-10 megabytes (MB) per second transfer rates over 5g with my netgear router. Before I would be lucky to hit 1.5 MBps. Make sure if you do this mod to read all of the instructions first in the FAQ. You have to set all the bios defaults and also have to disable the HP Recovery Partition (or in my case rename it and unmount it worked for me).

Interesting, is there something on the Recovery Partition that checks the BIOS during start-up?
