Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

 I have got an HDX x16 1300EO.
After upgraded from vista to windows 7 and re-installed the software from hp website, the dvd eject button & Treble/Bass stopped working.
The Wi-Fi will turn from blue to orange without anyone touching them.
HP Mobile ScrollSmart Remote Control stopped working.
 Volume is ok.

Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

Just disconnect everything and unplug accumulator for several minutes, it will force hardware reset. After that reinstall drivers for WiFi.

Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

I have an HDX16 1101EA and i had the same poroblem with the quick launch buttons.  the Bass/Treble came on screen without prompt and was corrupt (graphics) the WiFi turned itself on and off uncommanded and until recently was doing every couple of seconds.

the options i faced were

1. introduce the laptop to the joys of flight!!!

2. persevere and rectifiy the issue.

i trawled the net and found numerous people - like you guys on here with the same irritating problem; various solutions were muted which always involved software changes or BIOS upgrades.  I couldn't see this being a software issue because of the nature of the problem it was almost hardware related in my mind.  anyway i found a post from a guy (apologies i don't remember which forum) and he said that it was more than likely to be a 'static' electricity problem from the laptop and its surroundings.  Being involved in the Aerospace industry this sounded like a reasonable diagnosis to the problem.

The fix was to wrap self adhesive aluminium foil 'speed' tape around the launch button keypad ribbon where it is likely to come into contact with the metallic LCD panel hinge structure (one layer is enough).  You can get the tape from Maplins in the UK or any automotive parts factor.

In order to complete this fix you need to remove the keyboard and launch pad bezel.  There are a number of securing screws holding the Launc pad bezel and the keyboard to the lapto chasis, these will have to be removed first (a number of which are in the battery bay)  it is best to follow the HP assembly diagram which i sourced through Google.

I have done this fix and the problem has disappeared, the launch pad works fine (volume, eject wireless mute etc..).

Just take your time and it is well worth the result, like i said i was close throwing the laptop at the nearest HP re-seller.  Obviously if your laptop is still under warranty i would be reluctant to do this work myself but they will want it for 4 weeks - i couldn't lose the laptop for that long so that's why i did the repair myself - hey they let me lose on Aeroplanes, what damage could I do to a laptop!!!

Good luck.......

Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

I posted the fix on page 12 of this thread and also on multiple other threads for the DV8 & HDX16.

I have seen the directions about just adding the ground foil but there is also the issue with the exposed LIF connector on the LED board. That is where the static is discharging to that causes the actuations. Covering the LIF with an insulating tape as well as adding the foil shielding will resolve this problem %100 of the time when correctly applied. The DV8 tends to suffer the exposed LIF connector issue more than the HDX16 but it is still a good idea to do while you are in there.

Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

Sorry Brian,

I knew I had seen it somewhere; the scatter gun approach using Google for fixes in my case!!!  A good fix which has worked well so thanks for posting it.

I would advise anyone who is brave enough to follow Brian's fix, it is daunting if you are not mechanically minded but follow the limited strip down step by step and take your time.

The results are definately worth it!!

Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

No problem, I wasn't sure if you read one of the previous posts on adding ground foil or one of my posts with the additional steps. I am glad it worked. My instructions are not the easiest to follow but I am planning on taking it apart again to take some pictures of the process.

Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

Hi,

I have been facing this problem, since the time I upgraded my OS from Visa to Windows 7. I tried hell lot of things to fix this problems. I searched the HP Forums and searched all over the web to get a fix for this problem.

After trying a lot of things, I thought of giving my laptop for repair. But before that, I tried one more thing and I got succesful with that.

The Fix:

Go to Windows startup services by running msconfig from run window. Uncheck all the HP services from the startup like HP Wireless assistant, HP total Control etc. After that restart the laptop and the problem is gone. It worked well for me. I hope it will work for you as well.

Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

If you think that fixed it, try playing some music back for a while and listen to whether or not the volume is going up and down, or the bass and treble are changing.  Try using the Internet over wireless, or downloading a large file, and see whether or not you can sustain a connection.

There have been several corroborative incidents, in this forum, proving that this is not a software issue.  I wish you luck in your apparent success, but am quite certain your solution has just masqued the problem by removing any on-screen evidence of it.

Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

I meant to send this last week, but got busy with work and forgot about it...

I think it was after the Brian/CaptainBabble exchange that I became quite agitated that HP has let us all down on this issue, so I decided to take the issue up with their CEO.  I found a link to message him, where I sent him the following:

Just thought you should know that your consumers have taken to fixing your lemon laptops on their own because your support team can't recognize an engineering issue and escalate a recall.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/HDX16-Quick-Launch-Button-Issue/m-p/592205#M43438

Your complete lack of response to this issue has left me with such a sour taste that you can not only count on me not replacing the 5 current HP laptops I own with more HP laptops, but you can also count on me spreading the story of my terrible experience to anyone who will listen.

@smd2008 on twitter.

Thanks anyway,

Mike

So I believe it was the next business day, I got a call from their Case Management Office, about an issue that I had raised to the CEO.  I explained the issue to him, and then he tried to help me solve it.  I stopped him midway and explained to him that it's an engineering issue, it can't be fixed over the phone, and I've fixed it, like many people, by dismantling the machine and pulling out components.  He told me that it wouldn't be covered under warranty then, to which I replied that it wasn't under warranty anyway, and regardless, the warranty had been futile for those of us who have tried to get this issue resolved under it.  I then explained that my message to the CEO was intended to be helpful to HP, not to me.  That they might want to do something about this string of bad laptops rather than let their users take away a bad impression of their company.

But he just didn't get it.  In the end, the best he could offer me was a free extra year on a 2-year warranty on a new computer.  I was baffled.  Not because of the degree of offered compensation, but because of its ironic nature.  He didn't understand that I wasn't going to be buying any more HP products, or that the warranty for the one I had was ineffective.

Companies like HP just aren't going to be able to compete in the Thank You Economy.  They'll survive - perhaps like IBM has, but thrive?  They just don't get it, they don't get their customers, and they're going to lose brand equity because of it.

If you want to try your luck with the CEO, the link to his contact page is here:  http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/execteam/email/ceo/index.html

Feel free to quote what I sent him verbatim and sign your name to it.  This post is being reposted on my blog.

Re: HDX16 Quick Launch Button Issue

Simple SHORT TERM solution:      (NO AC power disconnect or battery removal required)

1>  Reboot

2>  Hit " F10 " during start-up/initialization

3>  Hit " F9 " while in "Bios Settings" screen then " Enter " (restores ALL Bios settings to "default settings")

4>  Hit " F10 " to Save and Exit Bios settings and continue with system start-up.

AGAIN this is a SHORT TERM fix, it may last a few minutes or several weeks; I STILL have NOT found a permanent fix for these problems.  And I know this sounds ABSURD [sadly LMAO], it appears that the "best" way to prevent future uhh, "fowl ups" is to maintain the "laptop" as close to level as possible without any "torsional stress", maintained nearly motionless AND without applying too much pressure on the surfaces surrounding the keyboard, I know, I know BUT it DOES work (usually) and this is what I will continue to do until I can buy a "Mac" or [sarcastically LMAO] HP provides a proper solution...

Any Additional information would be GREATLY appreciated...

Good Luck,

RKM_v3
