HP Pavilion DV5 temperatures

[ Edited ]
Hi

My Pavilion DV5-1260eo (AMD RM-74 2,2Ghz + Mobility Radeon 3650) has had overheating issues since I bought it in January '09. It overheats and shuts down even when playing old games (Diablo II etc) or when watching videos. I use it on a flat surface, and I clean the dust from the machine every now and then so the air flow shouldn't be a problem. The ambient temperature is normal room temp. I heard that the cheaper models have had similar issues which were fixed by a BIOS update, but it didn't work for me.

I checked the processor temperatures with HWMonitor. When booting up the laptop it shows about 70-75C idle temps. When stressing the processor with ORTHOS or Prime95 the temperatures climb as high as 100-105C, which got me worried. I know AMD processors normally run hotter than Intel's, but over a hundred degrees is quite ridiculous. When I stop the stress test, the temperature doesn't go lower than 80C anymore. I also tried running FurMark, and the maximum temperatures were 102C for the processor and 92C for the GPU (GPU idle temp ~60C).

I guess I have no choice but to send the laptop to HP before my warranty expires, but I would like to know if there are people out there who have had temperatures as high as I have?

Re: HP Pavilion DV5 temperatures

Mines not that bad, but still pretty rubbish, I use a active cooling pad a cheap £8 1 with 3 5v  fans, due to the casing on my pavilion dv7 i can only cool the harddrive and ram, the cpu & gpu & most the motherboard, seem to be sealed away together with a crappy little shared  fan and rubbish ineffective heatsinks cooling them both, theres no vent for air in which is odd and a bad idea.

Temperatures in celsius degrees: (IDLE (doing nothing)

MB:  38

CPU: 40

GPU: 37

Harddisk: 30 (+2 without cooling pad)

Temperatures in celsius degrees: (Light load (average use) )

MB:42

CPU: 45

GPU: 40

Harddisk:35 (+3 without coolingpad)

Temperatures in celsius degrees: (Medium load processor 50%+ )

MB: 52

CPU: 55

GPU: 50

Harddisk: (+3 without coolingpad)

Temperatures in celsius degrees: (Medium load processor 90%-100%)

MB: 66

CPU: 67

GPU: 62

Harddisk: 40 (+5 without coolingpad)
