Hello HP Forum Members,

I am using a HP Pavilion dv6 laptop computer.

Recently I had the internal hard drive replaced. The computer used to have Windows Vista on it. Now my computer, which is about 4 or 5 years old, has Windows 7 Professional 64bit.

I have a small remote that came with the laptop. I think its model number is RC6, however this may be incorrect. It's a small device and is rather oddly shaped.

I'm wondering what steps I need to take to get this remote working again now that my computer has no memory of it.

I've been doing some Googling and forum browsing and have determined that my computer recognises the device (it shows in Device Manager), however it is unresponsive. I've been testing it with Windows Media Player but I'm not sure if it's meant to work with that piece of software.

I'm hoping someone out there can offer some advice and a solution.

Thanks in advance.

Kieran.

Hello again CaptainKman,

I think the reason it is not working is as you posted you are off to one side when using it. As the document in my previous posts stats "The remote control requires a line-of-sight path between the infrared lens on the remote control and the infrared lens on the computer.". This would imply that you cannot stand off to one side as  you are trying to do.

Although, just a thought infrared is a light and light reflects. You could try putting a reflective surface somewhere on the far side of the room to see if you can bounce the beam of light to hit the receiver. Not a technical solution I know, but it might work.

I hope I have answered your questions to your satisfaction. Thank you again for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

Hi Dunidar,

Thank you for that first link.

I don't have a 'Product' or Product #' listing on any of my laptop's stickers, but it does have a p/n entry so I assume this is it.

It says:

p/n NW971PA#ABG

In case you need it too, the model number is dv6-1128TX.

Thank you for your reply.

Kieran.

Edit: Ok, it works when directly in front if the receiver but nowhere else. I can't just point it at the computer. It has to be right in front of the receiver. Is there a way to increase the signal strength?

Hello again CaptainKman,

Thank you for responding to my post requesting additional information. So as I understand it your remote control for your Media Center Notebook (Pavilion dv6). Now I am providing you with an HP Support document: Using the TV Tuner Remote Control with the Notebook PC which is going to provide you with a few things you need.

First, it sounds like the battery that is powering remote may be dying. The symptoms you describe certainly sound like they could be caused by the battery being too weak to send out a signal strong enough to get to the Notebook unless you are right in front of it. This document provides you with the step by step instructions to replace the battery (which is a replaceable part).

Secondly, the document provides what limited troubleshooting steps are available to your remote control. If replacing the battery does not resolve your issue be sure to read the troubleshooting steps provided.

Lastly, given the age of your computer this may be redundant, but the document also has a description of the functions your remote control has for your Notebook.

I hope I have provided you with the solution you expected. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

Hi Dunidar,

The battery is brand new so that's not the issue. It is a 3v one. Perhaps this voltage is too weak?

Going through the troubleshooting steps it seems that maybe the device was not meant to be used from a position that's not in front of the computer. Everything else is in order (correct drivers inatalled, new battery, etc).

I am looking to use the remote at school to change the slides of a presentation wihout interrupting the spoken part. This requires me to stand off to the side, where the remote won't work from.

If it's just not meant to work like this, that's fine. I don't need to use the remote, it would just make things more professional when giving the presentation.
