Ok, here is the story

My notebook is HP Probook 4520s

with Windows Windows 8.1 (6.3) 64-bit (Build 9600)

Please refer to the end of this post for CPU-Z report of specs.

Currently I have 3GB of memory installed -had to install them back after upgrade failure-.

Please refer again to the CPU-Z report for the memory module specifications.

I bought the following Corsair 2x4GB memory pack

Corsair CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9 8GB (2x4GB) 1333MHz DDR3 SODIMM

http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Memory/SODIMM/43657-CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9

Specs of new modules:

Warranty Lifetime
Size 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB)
Performance Profile none
Fan Included No
Heat Spreader—
Memory Configuration Dual Channel
Memory Type DDR3
Package - Memory Pin 204
Package - Memory Format SODIMM
Tested Voltage 1.5
SPD Voltage 1.5
Speed Rating PC3-10600 (1333MHz)
SPD Speed 1333MHz
Tested Speed 1333Mhz
Tested Latency 9-9-9-24
SPD Latency 9-9-9-24

When I installed the memory module onto the notebook, I basically couldn't go beyond the POST stage. That is the HP logo appears on the screen, and that's it.. that's it.. nothing beyond that stage.

When I went to the BIOS settings, the memory successfully read 81xxMB, this is basically 8GB of RAM.

I tried to reset BIOS settings, failed again.

I removed the 2x4GB modules, put back both original 1GB and 2GB modules -the ones that came with the notebook-, everything worked again.

What went wrong here..?

P.S. please do not reply with lame replies like "that's weird" "that's strange", I know it's weird and strange. I want specific and clear suggestions.

Specific and clear. Your laptop uses 1.35 volt memory and you installed 1.5 volt.

Here is the crucial page for the memory you need:

I'm having exactly the same problem with the same notebook and the exact same RAM. I'm super frustrated!!!

Quick update:

I updated my BIOS version to the following

vendor Hewlett-Packard
version 68AZZ Ver. F.21
date 06/13/2012
ROM size 2560 KB

The problem still exists.

I took a trip back to the store and tried a 1.35V option. Still didn't work. Same problem. RAM model Corsair CMSO8GX3M2C1600C11. This is 1600mhz RAM but as I understand it the computer should be clocking it back to 1333 automatically shouldn't it? They didn't have a 1.35V 1333 option for 2 x 4GB ram. It all seems to be coming in 1.5V now.

HP Recommended

Crucial is speccing DDR3-1600 but the Manual says DDR3-1066.

Manual

See page 3. 1066 speed sounds more like it for a first gen Intel Core CPU machine. That is a long way to downclock from 1600 to 1066.

I decided to look up the specs of the ram that was in there. In my case it is samsung ram 2x2GB M471B5673EH1-CH9 running at 1333mhz. This is 1.5V ram... That means crucial is flat wrong about 1.35V, unless HP made different versions of the 4520s. According to the manual, it says 1066 or 1333, which means you're probably right about it being 1066mhz. But that means based upon the ram that is in my machine now (2x2GBs running at 1333mhz 1.5V) should be able to be replaced with the ram that the first guy posted about - Corsair CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9 8GB (2x4GB) 1333MHz 1.5V DDR3 SODIMM (which I had also purchesed, but it failed to start). Now I'm just plain mad. This should not be so complicated. The HP manual does not say anything about what voltage the ram should be, so I have to go off what is in the machine, which is 1.5V. Any thoughts?

Ok, I did the ultimate sacrifice and ordered the Crucial memory item suggested by their site (someone has to do it to either confirm or kill that theory). I believe it will take around 7 days to arrive down under. So that's as soon as I can post a reply about how it went.

I have no expectations whatsoever! Either it's a made, or I've just thrown $115 off the balcony!

I have just purchased ram that works!!!! It's from G-Skill: F3-10666cl9d-8gbsq. It's DDR3-1333mhz and it's 2x4gb sticks. It is in fact... 1.5V. Latency CL9-9-9-24. I'm not sure if your able to cancel your order from crucial, their 1.35V ram probably won't work, unless hp sold a different 4520s in Australia. It's possible they did I suppose. Up to you. Good luck. I'd be interested to know what happens with your machine!

That's good to know. I'm thinking you've already installed the modules and booted up the notebook, right..?
