I have been dealing with HP tech support somewhere for over a month now. I believe they are located in India. It is like they are stringing me along until my warranty runs out! I have been passed from one to another, about 7 different people so far. All I want is to have a REAL tech person at a service center run this computer to see if the fan is not able to cool it. Sometimes it is so hot I cannot touch it and the temperature of the core duo is like 90c! It shuts down on its own. My puter is an HP Pavilion laptop dz6904ca with Windows Vista Home Premium. I have already updated the BIOS to no avail.
Beware of buying an HP in Vancouver, Canada as they have no tech center here! I am told I can go to Future shop etc, but will have to pay for service at huge rates! I asked the tech service in that endless series of emails to just tell me where an HP service depot was and none would do it, they simply passed me to another guy who promised me wonderful service and then suggested the same stuff the other 6 had done. You don't want to have this frustration.
I bought another Toshiba L300 at the same time with No problems. I have had 8 Toshibas and tried my first HP. I think it will be my last because of their tech service. I believe they should all be fired as they are just protecting their contract and don't offer any real help. The CD/DVD player never worked either as it won't play a music CD right through without balking. And you cannot set the lid closing options.

I have investigated the overheating on a pavillon notebook.
The fan control is not reliable. It acts fine for a while but then (in a way stochastically - but more often after standby or hibernation) the fan does run very slowly (or even not at all) though the temperature is climbing over 85°C.
It is a FLAWY FAN CONTROL!
I would strongly expect it a fan control system dirver issue, since
- the fan IS working,
- the fan IS [most of the time] regulating and
- the cpu [and other] temperatures ARE displayed correctly [also overheating] on controlling software.
Regrettably HP does not care and does not deliver the necessary driver update or help otherwise.
Shall the customers buy an new hp-notebook every 2 to 3 years.
If they do, HP executives made a right decision (according to shareholders value).
(But very probably I would not buy another hp-notebook after my experiences with the hp suppot (germany and international) .
