My

HP ENVY TouchSmart 17-j153cl Notebook PC

which I bought from costco,

has 'usb boost' on 1 of the usb ports.

Q1: which port has usb boost?

Q2: How do I test that it is working?

thanks

Hi,

I think it's the ReadyBoost.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/products/features/readyboost

Q1: USB 3.0 ports are labeled SS with the usb symbol. Look for a different label, perhaps RBSS or SSB etc..

Q2: I don't think you need it.

"ReadyBoost is designed to help when your PC's memory is running low."

16GB of RAM is more than enough today and I don't think you will need it.

Your query prompted me to investigate my laptop.  I switched it off and plugged a chargeable item (my phone) into every USB port, only one caused the charging light to come on.  On closer inspection this port has a tiny lightning symbol above the USB symbol, so that's how to identify it.  Certainly not obvious!

Those people confusing this with Readyboost are leading you astray.  This is an 'always on' charging port for things that will charge from a USB port such as a Sat-nav.

My hp laptop has also one usb boost port.
But when laptop is closed , the boost port is not charging my mobile!!

What is the use of hp usb boost port?

I have the Envy 15T

and the "boost" port is on the left side nearest to the front  (user) side

it is identified by a USB symbol followed by a lightning bolt.

not sure what it does, tho.

The way the USB boost should work is to charge a phone, satnav, etc while the computer is switched off.  Any USB port will charge it when the computer is on, but this one works when it is off, so you could do it overnight for instance.
