I have an HP envy laptop less than 6months old operating on windows 8 and my Ctrl key doesn't work as it should.

I know the Ctrl key itself is not broken as it works when pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete or Ctrl + Left mouse key to open links in new tab and Ctrl + P to print. However the shortcuts as Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, Ctrl + X don't work at all. This is the case in all programmes including word, Excel and Firefox.

Ctrl + Insert and Shift + Insert do work for copy and paste function but frankly they are far less convenient.

Any suggestions would be greatly apprectiated as it's very frustrating.

Thank you

Hello jc84ox,

You’re not able to use your copy and paste function.

Go to device manager and uninstall the keyboard. Restart the computer.

Do a hard reset.
Once the computer is off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

Turn the computer back on.

Open up command prompt and run the following command SFC /scannow.

This will scan the system files and correct any errors that it can.

Here is a link to command prompt.

When you go to open command prompt, right click and run as administrator.

If the function was working in the past you might try a system restore.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly without affecting your personal files.

Windows 8 has a new feature which will uninstall and reinstall windows without affecting your files.

Here is a link to both options if you would like to give either of them a try.

Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

Hi krzysiek033,

I see that you're having an issue with your ctrl key. The left one just doesn't work with ctrl c or v. Below is a link with some more hotkey commands, try a couple other ctrl commands and see if they respond at all. What is the model number of your Envy? Below is a document that will show you how to check your model number.

Hi krzysiek033,

Below you will find a link to a document on troubleshooting the keyboard on a notebook. I would try Stuck Key first because that would help is something is causing it not to work. Then do the Pressing key does nothing.

This doesnt help. Laptop is almost brand new. Left crtl works fine with other situations. C and V too. It seems like something is blocking LEFT Ctrl+C and V. Maybe some HP software use this shortcut or something.

Hi krzysiek033,

The only thing that we can really do on the software side of things is looking at uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard drivers. I would recommend downloading the drivers first. You will use Device Manager to uninstall the keyboard. Look for Synaptics TouchPad or something similar.

Uninstalling via Device Manager:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff553572(v=vs.85).aspx

Keyboard Drivers:

If that doesn't work then it is a hardware issue, give HP Total Care a call at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or visit the link below if you are outside North America. You mentioned it was a newer laptop so it should still be in warranty.

I got the same problem with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. My Laptop is HP ENVY Sleekbook 4. Please help me to solve this!

I recently had problems trying to fix an HP 2000 for a friend.

Initially i thought it was a program, malware or driver problem.

Turns out it was a lot of cat hair under the keyboard, i removed all the hair on the ICs/electrical components under the keyboard and this resolved the issue, couldnt vacuum the stuff off had to use masking tape to pick up all the bits of cat hair.

Symptons were:

All the keys worked fine individually but only SOME combinations of keys with ctrl would not work. IE Ctrl + Q worked but not Ctrl + C.

If you want to check for a hardware issue what i did was to use a program which captures key strokes to see what is being sent by the keyboard.

I used the following program to see whether the keys were being sent http://www.delphiforfun.org/programs/utilities/KeyCodes.htm

And to double check i booted into a Windows PE environment and ran the program.

Incidentally a nice easy way to make a Windows PE boot disk/usb key is to use Macrium Reflect Free. I'm not associated with them in any way. It's a nice program which makes images of your computer for backup purposes.

Im pretty impressed with the software and hope its ok for me to mention it.
