hard drive failure message, and Short DST fail

[ Edited ]

Hello, and thanks

alright, this is the first time i have had this issue.

only thing on the computer that was changed recently was a windows update yesterday, it came up automatically, shut the computer down, and restarted automatically. Java has wanted to update for a couple days

if its worth anything, the error came up when i was watching instant streaming on netflix.

half a year old (maybe) Pavilion dm1
windows 7 64 bit
AMD E-350 precessor

product ID 00359-OEM-8992687-00010

gave me a warning message that hard disk drive failure was eminant, and adviced me to back up everything. computer seems to be functioning normal other than the error/warning message.

when i restarted the computer and ran the test that comes up i ended up with this, it says it may take over an hour, but this comes up after about a minute.

testing drive : 1
SMART Check: Passed
Short DST: Failed

Failure ID: 9LNF2M-5K55RT-MFH14J-60WA03
Product ID: XY961UA#ABA
Hard Disk 1

not sure where to go from here with it.

only other thing i have had happen with it is video driver crashes when i have a stale youtube video left in a tab. i assume that is unrelated, and i just trained myself to avoid that.

thanks! i appreciate the help.

Hi,
Welcome to the HP Forum! :smileyhappy:

In Windows open the HP Support Assistant. Go to the Diagnostics tab and run the hard disk test. If your notebook is in warranty, the hard disk is a warranty replacement item. If the test returns a fail on the hard disk test contact HP warranty service.

I recommend backing up your data as soon as possible to an external hard disk..

Kind regards,
erico

when i go in the HP support assistance under troubleshoot, and run the hard disk check, what i get back is

smart check OK
fragmentation: action needed
space OK

mentions nothing else.

it defragments each week on Wednesday, but i did the analyze since it said action was needed.
c was 7% fragmented, and i am defragging it now.

is that what you meant by Diagnostics. the only options i am given are,
Maintain,
Troubleshoot,
Learn,
Get Assistance

i went to troubleshoot,
then to storage devices,
then under the hard drive tab
then i am given the options:

hp disk check, manage hard drive, or defragment.

i went to disk check

thankyou.

You went to the right place.

Now do the folowing step:

Go into the BIOS and do the hard disk diagnostic.

With most current (manufactured within the last year or so) HP and Compaq notebooks:

Press the power button and watch the screen (as all of this happens quite quickly)

If you see a blurb that says press Esc for startup option then press it.

The next screen will list a few options but you are interested in F10 BIOS.

Press the F10 key to enter the BIOS

Look in the index of the Windows 7 notebook manual for your notebook and refer to the BIOS section on page 60.

Most HP notebooks use F11 to access the BIOS. Yours uses the older style  F10 to invoke it. :smileywink:

OK. Remove the hard disk and see if it goes to BIOS.

If it does go to BIOS and does not shut off, then  your hard disk did just what the BIOS warned that it would.

I do hope you have a Recovery disc set made.

Re: hard drive failure message, and Short DST fail

Hello Frederic45.

You need to replace your hard drive.  You should be able to purchase the parts on the notebook's HP Parts Surfer Page.

Had you previously created any Recovery Media such as a thumbdrive?  Without this you'll be unable to reinstall the operating system when you replace your hard drive.  You'll need to contact HP Support in order to get one of these kits.  The number for US/Canadian customers is 1-800-474-6836.  If you're in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.
