issues with blue ray driver, optiarc bd rom bc-5500s. firmware update necessary?

Hello everyone

while i was trying to burn a dual layer ISO with imgburn (which other people have sucessfully burnt), i received the following message:

error message

after trying again with a different media, and checking my memory to see if that was not the issue, i tried looking for a firmware update for my blue ray driver, optiarc bd rom bc-5500s. i found out that the manufacturer has released new firmware updates:

http://www.sony-optiarc.eu/en/supportservice/downloads/bluraydrivesnotebooks/bc5500s.html

but they warn us, users, of the following:

"Also note that our firmware updates are not compatible with those provided by OEM vendors (Sony Optiarc drives pre-installed by the PC manufacturers e.g. HP, Dell, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Apple etc.). You may damage your drive if you flash it with incompatible firmware."

"You can only update from Firmware versions 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1,04 and 1.05. Previous firmware version(s) other than mentioned here are probably OEMs and therefore cannot be updated with this file. Contact your PC manufacturer (FTS, DELL, HP....) if you require firmware updates for these drives."

so here i am, stuck...

my current firmware is in version 1.83,

can anyone shine some light on this?

Dude, I found a 1.4 firmware for that drive at this link: http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/288711/sony-bc-5500s-(s-ata)-blu-ray-firmware-1.04-free-download.h...

make sure to click on the backup server link to download the file.

Hope this helps.

Thx Ric, i apreciate the effort, but that is the same firmware update that exists on the link i posted, the big issue is, as warned by the manufacturer, if i update the firmware using the 1.4 one, it may damage my notebook, since it is not the one provided by the OEM :/

"Also note that our firmware updates are not compatible with those provided by OEM vendors (Sony Optiarc drives pre-installed by the PC manufacturers e.g. HP, Dell, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Apple etc.). You may damage your drive if you flash it with incompatible firmware."

and i couldnt find any firmware update provided by HP :/

but i thank you anyways =)

Re: issues with blue ray driver, optiarc bd rom bc-5500s. firmware update necessary?

m also still waiting for a firmware update for this device. My Dv7 wont play any blu-ray since may 09 and I was quite shure that a software update would sort this thing out. In September my laptop's warranty expired and HP says they cant help me anymore. I notice that there are lots of people out there having the same issues with this hardware. Just for the record, my symptoms are I put in a Blu-ray disc and the drive spins up and down repeatedly like it's trying to read, but nothing ever happens on the screen. The OS never realizes there is a BD in the drive. It used to play some blu-rays but one day just stopped working. When I go into my computer to view the drives, and have a blu ray disk in (tried this with 4 blu rays) it thinks there is no disk at all in the drive. I've tried updating firmware, updating quickplay, downloading powerdvd 9, checked drivers in device manager and pretty much anything else I can think of. So now Im at the point where I think the drive might be bad but dont really want to fork out the money for a new one if I dont really have to.

Had a similar problem with several recent Blu Ray discs. Fixed it by installing Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 trial version. Am about to purchase it now that I know it fixes the issues.

Re: issues with blue ray driver, optiarc bd rom bc-5500s. firmware update necessary?

I too have had that issue with the BC-5500s (fw 1.83).

The trick I found to keep it from doing that was to run it at 6x, which was the highest I could go before ruining another disc.

I'm more than positive this is an issue with the firmware itself, and it would be fantastic if HP could get off their ass and update it.

I have tried 2 different laptops, same drive, formated 1 laptop with Windows Vista, and then with Windows 7, and the second laptop was Windows Vista. All had the same problems that you are having. Unfortunately, I havn't had any luck finding a solution to this.

Obviously, for the most part this didn't help, but maybe it might work for burning at super slow speeds.

Me too. Hp just ignore us (optiarc bc-5500s users) for about 3 years. This happens when there's no economical interest!

Surtout n'installez pas le firmware de Sony Optiarc (version 1.06) car le flashage échouera.

Don't install the Sony Optiarc  firmware (version 1.06) because the flash will fail.
