purchased HP DV7 17.3" AMD Quad Core 8GB RAM, 750GBHD. compared to i3, i5 or i7? which one is it?

recently purchased HP DV7 17.3" AMD Quad Core 8GB RAM, 750GBHD & Antivirus /Steel Grey.

I called the HP support line and they told me that is was that same as getting the Intel i7? Went to Best Buy today and ask one of their sales reps and they said that HP lied and that it is not in comparison to the i7 it is more like the i3.  Is this true?  Can someone please tell me if what I purchased is a good laptop.  thanks.

Hi,

There are many HP dv7 AMD Quad core laptops (models) around, we need to know which one is yours ? We also can not compare just using i3, i5 or i7 because Intel has many models for their CPU's.

Regards.

Check this comparison:

I would say it is not on par with an i7, and is actually more like an i3 at best. How much did you pay for it? I would need that to know if you have any legitimate complaint. You should not expect to get a bleeding edge machine for under say $1200-1300.It does have a lot of nice features and depending on what you want to do may be perfectly adequate. Even a "good", not "great" current model laptop is a very fast machine.

I paid $799.99 for it. I'm really disappointed that it's not even close to an i5, that hurts b/c I was ready to buy i7 15" with same specs at sams club for $699 :smileysad:

I like AMD and think they have a place in the market but for laptops I generally will only consider an Intel machine. Is there any right of return? You should not be stuck with something you do not want although you might find that it fully meets your needs. If you were planning on doing serious gaming you will be disappointed, however. Other than that, the machine is more than adequate for anything you might want to do with a computer.

If you do not play 3d high-demand games, or process video for production or Photoshop batches of hundreds of pictures it will be just fine for years to come. It is a 17.3 inch model which tend to cost a bit more and has all the bells and whistles of a top of the line laptop, just not a first-line CPU. The graphics is even mid-range so it will play a lot of games that a budget laptop could not. $799 is a fair price for it, not a steal but I would not expect it to be sold anywhere for less than about $729 or so.
