"Imminent Hard Disk Failure"

I have a Presario CX60-215DX notebook , running Windows Vista. Upon startup I get "Imminent Hard Disk Failure" error message on a black screen. I went into BIOS utility and did Hard drive self test which failed and it advised me to replace the hard disc drive. Should I just go ahead and replace hard drive or is there something else I can do first? Notebook is only a few years old..does the hard drive fail that quick? Also since I cant get into Windows how do I back-up my personal data? I dont have that much personal files...how do I know what size storage device I would need to back up personal files?

Hi,

Perhaps this article will be helpful.  Yes, hard drives do fail.  If you can get your laptop to boot up then back up your data then have the hard drive replaced.  Do you have a set of the HP Recovery Disks? HP Recovery Disks.

If your PC will not boot up then you need to have the hard drive replaced.

There might be an outside chance that the data on the hard drive can be recovered.  You could try an external USB 2.5" drive enclosure and see if you can access the data. Another thought is to send the hard drive into the hard drive manufacturer and see if the data can be recovered.  Most hard drive manufacturers do have a data recovery service for a fee.

Re: "Imminent Hard Disk Failure"

I already followed the advice of that article and it failed. Result: Test failed: replace hard drive. Can I back up my personal data to a flash drive or CD? How do I do it if Windows doesn't start up?

Re: "Imminent Hard Disk Failure"

Hi,

Try HP Recovery Disks or F11 Recovery and you should see an option to backup your data to external media before you attempt a destructive recovery.
