Brand new 8540w Freezes with Advanced Dock and lid closed

Just received my new HP 8540w Elitebook with Windows 7 (64-bit) and Advanced Docking station (NZ222AA#ABA). 16GB of RAM Model

Everything appears to be working fine with one exception.  I cannot dock this machine in the docking station and power it on with the lid closed.  If I do, then the machine freezes at the 'Starting Windows' screen OR it will Bluescreen right after that screen completes.

If I pop the lid open just a crack(so my external monitors are used and not the laotop screen) and power up, things work fine.  But if I undock it and then re-dock it and forget to open the lid just a little, the machine will freeze or blue screen when 'Starting Windows' animation starts. Once I get to the login screen, I am able to close the lid and everything behaves normally.

To troubleshoot, I disconnected all peripherals from the docking station with the exception of the monitors.  Lid open, it works perfectly.  Lid closed and freeze or blue screen.

To me this definately sounds like a BIOS issue but I have verified that I am running the most recent BIOS version of 68CVD Ver. F08.  I have evern re-applied that BIOS version with the same results.  It is almost like the docking station is conflicting with somthing like the fingerprint reader or something.

Please advise.

Re: Brand new 8540w Freezes with Advanced Dock and lid closed

Hi,

same model, 8GB RAM, Win7 Ultimate 64bit, BIOS 68CVD updated to Ver. F.0A, 6/22/2010, and NVIDIA driver updated to ver. 8.17.12.5896, date 7/9/2010: just bumped into a freeze condition when selecting the "PowerSaver" profile.

I've rolled back the NVIDIA driver to version 8.17.11.9805, date 6/3/2010, and it worked fine for me.

Check BIOS version (MSInfo32) and NVIDIA driver version (Device Manager) and let us know.

Cheers!

G.

I can confirm that a rollback of the NVidia driver fixes this lid-closing behavior and bootup hang.
