Just got this Envy 17 3D 2090nr 13 days ago. It froze once or twice a day at first, then HP downloaded a bunch of new drivers which seemed to help. Then this past weekend, I had 6 lockups in one day.
I can't pin point the problem because some were downloading large files over my wireless from my desktop PC, so I thought it might be the wireless like others are saying. I updated and downgraded the drivers to no avail.
Now it is happening when connected to my external HDD, not even using the internet, although the wireless is still on. 2 freezes last night in one hour.
Windows 7 Home premium, 64-bit. No Norton came with the unit (I saw another post that someone else did not have Norton and support said that the store he got it from must have done something because it should have Norton). I am using Comodo Internet Security (both firewall and antivirus) and have had no warnings of viruses or firewall breaches. (I found a directory in the Program Files directory for Microsoft Works, but works is not on the computer - at least it does not show up in the start menu or in the list of programs that can be uninstalled in Control Panel - that's rather odd!)
The freezes at first allow me to move the mouse and the cursor moves but if I click anywhere on the screen, then the mouse freezes too. It is a complete freeze, no blue-screen, just cannot do anything and have to power off and restart.
This is extremely frustrating! Last night I was trying to back my files up to my external drive in case support says I need to send the unit in for repair and it locked up twice in one hour. I can't even get my files backed up!
Need help with this issue from HP. It seems many other owners of the Envy (3D or not) are having the same trouble. This has to be a hardware issue, but I don't know whether it is the wireless card or not since it happens without using the internet.
Please help! I am extemely frustrated as I just got done with an HP dv7-2000 that gave me fits for three years and was finally refunded my money by the warranty contract because they could not get it to work right - constant overheating and memory/CPU running at 100%). I bought a Dell XPS which had USB 3.0 ports that were causing lockups and crashed my external HDD (got it fixed). I returned it to Dell and got my money back. I was researching and it seemed HP had finally got the message on the overheating issue and the Envy got very high ratings in tech reviews - even higher than the Dell XPS. So, I decided to give HP another try and I get a laptop that freezes constantly! AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Help HP!! PLEASE!!!!

Hi,
On your machine was pre-installed Microsoft Security Essentials (free antivirus and antimalware software).
Please uninstall it and check the results.

I have the 2290NR and have the same issue, the solution temporarily is to get the old driver package. There is a link in the forums to and I may still have. What you want is driver 13.0.0.107 - not perfect but should stop the lockup issue or get it down to once a week. The lockup has to do with the Intel Centrino 6200N wifi card. HP is sending me a new version of the card to install tomorrow. On the off chance it doesn't work I have ordered a 6300N which is a triple channel card and I will have to add another antenna. If you Google 6200N you find a lot of people with this problem.
I suggest getting the Network Meter widget from Microsoft and you can watch your wifi connectivity die prior to a freeze. There are times it will return, but normally it die everytime with any of the 14.x drivers.
Link is the fourth post in the thread.

I have downloaded the 13.0.0.107 driver. I unistalled the newer driver and even checked the box to delete the driver software from the computer.
After the installation, it says I have driver 14.0.1.2, another time it said 14.0.2.2.
What am I doing wrong? How can I get the 13 driver to install?

I called HP and asked for the Envy specialized support. Told them I had no help from the chat support and detailed what I did. The tech overnighted a new 6200 n WiFi board and with the old driver I have run perfectly over two weeks.

Ten days ago, I purchased an Envy 17 3D 2090R and am also being plagued by the lockup issue that seems to be very prevalent. I am convinced it is in fact due to the Intel Centrino 6200 hardware and drivers.
This is quite disheartening. Purchasing a 6300 card on my own to fix a brand new machine should not be the fix.

I Finally got the 13 driver to install. so far so good. Intel really needs to fix this, though!
Thanks for all the helpful replies
