Compaq CQ56 - No boot up ~ Caps Lock Blink after freeze? :( Please help!xx

Last night; I was browsing normally on facebook, then my laptop totally freezes, no life to it was so ever. 

I was forced to do an inproper shutdown. However, once booting back up.. the screen went blank and only CAPS lock lights were flashing (excluding the f12 wireless light), there is no screen life? Occasionally if left a while, when powering up the screen will come on past the orange start up screen but will only get to ''Starting Windows'' ~ then will go blank again. IF on the occasional successful orange screen i try access the bios. It fails and goes blank again?

Please help.. It's rather frustrating and my laptop is still under warranty but I'm afraid to send it back as we have tried reseating the RAM and other internal elements.

Hi,

This can occasionally help.

With the notebook shut down, remove the AC Adapter, remove the battery and then hold down the power button for a full minute.  Re-insert the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out ) and see if the notebook will start.

Well, in a way your solution has helped boot the laptop. I can now after utilizng your method boot the laptop successfully up until the ''Starting Windows Screen'' In which the laptop screen goes blank once again.

Hi,

Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to see if you can now enter the bios menu.  If you can, under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  See if these tests will run and if they do, post back with the details of any error messages.

Whoops didn't mean to click solved sorry, i'm having trouble again trying to boot at all.. :/

Wouldit be a bad time to mention the power on button appears to be flashing when the sourounding of the case is pushed?

Hi,

Another thing worth trying if you have more than 1 ram module installed would be to remove one and see if the notebook will boot.  If it doesn't, try the same ram module but in the other slot.  If it still won't boot, repeat the process with the other module.  See if any combination will allow the laptop to boot.

Also let me know if there is a pattern to the led 'blinks' - ie 2blinks, a pause, 2 blink etc.

Sorry to bring up this old thread but I have the same problem... It's a Compaq Presario CQ61...
It starts on battery, black screen, caps lock blinking 2-pause-2-pause-2....
I see it is a BIOS related error, so... how do I fix it??

I also have a CQ61 and I have a similar problem, only the LEDs blink only once.

Here's the full story: originally I had WIndows 7 on that laptop (the preinstalled OS), and decided to do a factory reset. During that procedure, it froze. And after that, it wouldn't boot at all, I tried absolutely everything, nothing worked. I took it to HP service, they replaced the motherboard and the CPU, and it was fixed (guarantee hasn't expired, so they did it for free).

I installed windows xp and everything worked fine for a couple of days. Then suddenly, when I turned it on one day it simply wouldn't start. I shut it off and on for a few times and it worked as if nothing had happened. This went on for a day or two until there came a time where it wouldn't start at all, no matter how many times I tried. So here I am now. Needless to say, I won't be buying HP notebooks again, I don't feel like buying a new one every two years or have it repaired every two weeks.

Anyway, according to this link, my code means "CPU failure".

Yours mean "BIOS corruption failure".

Do you have a USB floppy? It's possible to reinstall the BIOS without loading it. You can try googling it. Didn't work for me.

its defenetly not ram or cpu that is just small possibility i do repair board and this board has 3 main failure from 3 2 related to heat.

i no going to tell you the solution because i no spreading my bread ;-)

but i can tell you now

there is no way to fix this at home  you have to have industrial class tools like the manufacture and you have to folow the ESD protected work

this laptop board gonna work for while if the unit perfect clean and the went working ok.

so its not a hard reset or etc its hardware 100%

thanks all for your help what i did to allow my laptop to boot was i removed the top ram out of my notebook and replaced it with the bottom one i left the top ram out and it allowed my laptop to boot normally i recomend you try this first if there are still problems Thank you
