Hi,
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disk C once to highlight it, right click Local Disk C and select Properties. Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'. In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start. Agree to schedule the check at the next system restart and then restart the notebook - this process can take several hours to complete before loading back into Windows.
Regards,
DP-K

started the scan - went to 4%, then gave the following error message
"windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"
Tried to rerun, but got the message
"another servicing or repair operation is currently running. Please wait for this to finish and run sfc again"

Hi,
Start the notebook and let Windows fully load. Hold down the Windows key and press R. In to the Run box type msconfig and hit enter. In the following window, click the Start up tab, remove the tick next to each start up item and then click Apply to make the change. Restart the notebook.
See if you can run the sfc /scannow
Whether this works or not, hold down the Windows key and press R. In to the Run box type msconfig and hit enter. In the following window, click the Start up tab, enter a tick tick next to each start up item and then click Apply to make the change. Restart the notebook again for the change to take effect.
Let me know.
Regards,
DP-K

ok - did what you instructed.
Still failed at 5% with the message
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation
After a few minutes there was a Norton Error message. The Norton support site said to de-install Norton & try again.
Did that.
Disabled all items in startup menu and restarted.
Re-ran sfc /scannow
stopped again at 5% with same error message.
Just rebooted with startup items back on
Thanks for working this with us

Hi,
You're welcome ![]()
Try the following.
Download and run the relevant Norton Removal Tool for your product from the link below.
When this has completed, restart the notebook.
See if you can now run the system file check ( sfc /scannow ).
Whether or not it completes, reinstall Norton, restart the notebook and let me know.

Looking in the system event logs - seeing a lot of timeout issues.
Don't know if this is relevent or not.

Hi,
Shut down the notebook. Tap away at f8 as you start the notebook to enter Windows Recovery Console. Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and hit enter. When this has loaded, see if sfc /scannow will execute in this mode.
To exit Safe Mode, restart the notbook.
