ENVY 17 - Power on and sleep resume problems

ENVY 17 3D - CTO 2100

CPU: Intel Core i7 2630

RAM: 6 GB

HDD: 750GB

Everything else is bone stock basics HP equipment.

I bought my ENVY last year and ever since I recieved it I've had a couple of issues with the system powering on and/or resuming from sleep/hibernate correctly.

1st Problem - After powering off and letting the system sit overnight power up results in the keyboard lights coming on, but nothing comes up on the screen. The keyboard is unresponsive and using the top function buttons to turn volume on/off or using the external display keys (F4) doesn't yield any results. Only solution seems to be to force a shutdown by holding the power button which always results in an audible "pop" from the speakers. Powering back on again the system behaves normally.

2nd Problem - When resuming from sleep or hibernate after sitting for a bit (maybe an hour or more) opening the notebook results in the keyboard lighting up and you can hear the HDD spinning, but again, the system is unresponsive. The only solution is to force a reboot at which point everything works right.

Both behaviors are 100% repeatable at this point and it's staring to become quite annoying. I have a feeling this is somehow linked to the switchable graphics, but I've uninstalled CCC and used driver sweeper and reinstalled the latest HP drivers to no affect. I've searched the web endlessly over the last year and can't find any solution that works. Help!

Re: ENVY 17 - Power on and sleep resume problems

Thanks for taking the time to post, but all you've done is provide me with a link telling me how sleep and hibernate work. I already know that. The problem is that they don't work right and I'm forced to do a hard reset to get the notebook running again.

I have set power options to the default HP values so sleep/hibernate should be working as intended by HP (but they aren't).

Re: ENVY 17 - Power on and sleep resume problems

Hello,

But I could have sworn that I saw this: Configure the Sleep and Hibernate modes

There are a number of different ways to configure how the Sleep and Hibernate modes are implemented in the notebook.

Re: ENVY 17 - Power on and sleep resume problems

[ Edited ]

Hello once more,

It could also be a stability issue; have you ever done a OS/HD scan? If not, please do the scans now; if anything in the OS is out of place these scans should fix them, okay? So please goto the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt, type the following command and hit enter:

sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter again. Do not do this next scan unless the computer has passed the previous scan. If it has passed the previous scan, click the Start Menu again, click Computer, left click Local Disc C once to highlight it, right click Local Disc C and select Properties, click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'.  In the following window make sure both boxes are checked and then click Start.  The computer will ask to schedule the check at the next system restart?  Click 'Yes." and then restart the laptop.

This process can take several hours to complete and cannot be interfered with whatsoever, okay? Once completed the laptop will restart itself.

Re: ENVY 17 - Power on and sleep resume problems

Thanks again for the replies.

I know how to configure sleep hibernate under the options as suggested by your link. That's not the issue.

I have seen the sfc command and chkdsk /f commands in previous threads on similar issues and have run both to no affect. Sfc returns no problems, as does chkdsk.

I think I've found part of the problem though...

HP's default settings have the notebook put to sleep after 15 minutes, but the HDD turns off after 3 min on battery. Similar incongrous timings exist for being plugged in. I've changed the HDD off function to occur after sleep instead of before and I'll see if that takes care of it.
