Freezing keyboard on Pavilion g6-1b60us

Got a Pavilion g6-1b60us with this intermittent problem which I haven't traced to anything. All of a sudden, while I am typing text, the keyboard becomes unresponsive to any input. The mouse responds and opens menus, but I cannot type letters. The odd thing is, the system acts as if it is stuck in the Ctrl key mode. Like, when you have clicked on your desktop and you can make your icons bigger or smaller. Has anybody experienced this? Or with the INternet browser, it brings up menus connected with the Ctrl key. How can I undo that.? It's as if some unnoticed key stroke caused it and I do not know which one. Thanks in advance for your help.
