Hi,
Laptop is 20 months old, using Vista sp2.
Starting to have problems on switching on!, once the on/off button is pressed the start up screen appears as normal and then disappears as if loading but the screen stay blank and a flashing underscore is visable in the top left corner. Its happened twice now, i think after window updates, any ideas

i have an idea. hard drive failure. I've seen that happen if either the computer can't detect the hard drive, or if it can't read the boot sector of the hard drive (which would direct the computer to where vista is on the hard drive, so it can start loading vista). It might seem like a coincidence that it happened because of an update, but sometimes it's unrelated and your hard drive can just die.
My BIOS is a little older than yours, so I don't know what options yours will show, but mine has a built-in hard drive self test.
When you hit the startup screen, look at teh bottom of the screen for the key that will take you to the "boot options" menu or something similar to that. If there's not an option there for a diagnostic or "self test", then enter setup and look for diagnostics or HDD tools there so it can check your hard drive and see if it's bad.
Write back with what you find if you want more help/ideas.
