G72 C55DX Notebook shuts down on over heating

If I watch YouTube videos, sync with an iPod or have too many windows open the computer will shut down. Upon restarting it the screen shows the message that overheating was the problem. I checked all of the vents to verify that they were clean and not blocked. I then purchased a lap pad with 2 USB powered fans built in. It helped but it will still shut down. Any suggestions other than turning my living room into a walk in cooler?
