G72 Notebook won't boot into windows - Black screen flashing cursor

My G72 notebook won't boot into windows. After the HP splash screen with the esc option for the startup menu, the screen goes black and the cursor moves from the upper left hand corner to the center of the top of the screen and sits there and blinks.

I have tried the hard reset several times. I've removed the memory chips and reseated them. I've unplugged the hard drive and reconnected that. I've run Norton Boot recovery which cleared 5 things the first time I ran it. I've also run the Windows 7 64 bit recovery and repair CD. I performed both the memory check and hard disk check with no problems reported.

Using the Windows recovery CD, I've gone to the command prompt and been able to see what looks like all of my files and data on D:\, when I look at C:\ drive it is empty.

Any suggestions on what the problem could be and how to resolve?

Try attaching the notebook hard drive as a 2nd hard drive to a desktop machine and use the host desktop machine to run a check disk on the notebook hard drive.

Unfortunately, I don't have a working desktop machine handy. Any other suggestions while I ask around to see if I can borrow a desktop to test with?

It might be easier to move the hard drive to the desktop.
