Pretty slick. Not so sad anymore. They sent a box, returned notebook Tuesday before noon, had it back Thursday before noon. So far so good, but took extended warranty, just in case this happens again.

1) Update the drivers (VGA, chipset, LAN, wifi etc...)
2) Update to the latest BIOS (F.33 as of 2/8/2012)
3) Took the whole thing apart (what a nasty job), re-seat the CPU heat sink, apply new thermal paste using Arctic Silver 5. Made sure the heat sink was making proper contact with the CPU.
4) Clean install of Windows 7
After all these, I'm still getting the dreaded thermal shutdown. I made sure I'm not over-running the CPU. Things I typically do are Word processing, spreadsheet, web browsing etc. But this thing just shuts down at a random point, no matter what I was doing.
The CPU area is not even hot, it's an Intel core i3 M370. I also used Everest to monitor the CPU temperature, idling at 33C, and when I run intelburntest, it stays at about 60C. I found these temperature normal.
My conclusion: Defective motherboard (maybe a bad sensor or something)
I can't believe HP has this issue going on for some many models of their laptop. Just Google HP 630 Thermal Shutdown, there's even some youtube videos for that. My bad for not doing enough research before buying this thing. But I guess I know what brand NOT to buy next time.

Your unit should still be under MFR warrenty. Call HP tecnical support and explain the problem to them. They fixed mine for free and it works just fine now. And yes, you are right. It is the mother board. They replaced my system board which is the same time. They had it back to me within 24 hrs. Hope this helps.

Called again today. This time they are sending me a box to ship it back in. Last time I called they wanted me to pay to ship it there. So hopefully I will have a working laptop soon. I love the system, just not the shutdowns.

bought new HP 630 in oct 2011 in India. giving frequent overheating problems since then and now even more with summers approaching. system crashed multiple times with loss of important data. with so many posts here and elsewhere on google, will approach service center at earliest. if they rectify the fault, good. if not will sell of the system and buy dell or mac. HP should recall this product else they will lose trust of customers. They have lost a significant market share to apple and dell already. will keep everyone updated with my experience.

I'm afraid I also chose thermal shutdown mode. Will keep my data backed up, when she dies - off she goes to laptop heaven. No problem with shipping the unit back for repair and return (all within 3 days which is amazing), but I have had two thermal shutdowns since the product was returned. I give up. Also tried to purchase an extended warranted, since I could see problems coming down the road. That mission also went off the rails. Too much brain damage and there are other products out there.

i wonder if this helps anyone.
the company i work for sold about 4 of these laptop. each one had a 2GB PNY 1066 PC8500 RAM upgrade and each one returned to us with 90D Thermal shutdown errors. we have sent them to HP for repair and they have all come back with the extra RAM removed with a sticker on them saying "DO NOT USE WITH HP EQUIPMENT" we have tested the laptop constantly for a week an no shutdown. as a test we put the RAM back in and within 2hrs we had the error back.
