Hello, I have an HP DV4 2170us, it is about three and a half years old, so I know it is fairly old for a laptop. Overtime its battery has completely failed, which is understandable, but now it appears as if it is at its end. Whenever I try to start it, it turns on, but nothing appears on the screen. The opening windows animation never displays, nor does the lock/logic screen, and it will simply stay as if it were stuck between the second I push the on button and when the windows animation would show. I try to shut the computer down manually and it will, but if a I restart the same thing happens.
What can I do to fix this... or at least get data off of it? What seems to be the problem?

I saw your post on Computer Does not Start on your HP Pavilion dv4-2170us Entertainment Notebook PC.
Here is a document that will help resolve this issue.
Please let me know if you require further assistance.

This document gives you options before doing a system reset. A hard reset will not delete any data stored on your computer. It is merely a step in the process.

Sorry that did not work for you. If you follow this link to enter Safe mode on start up and then do system restore. It should help.
Please read the documents FULLY.

Nothing comes up on the screen at all, it remains black. The wireless/volume buttons stay red (as if off/muted), nothing turns on. I can hear the fan, and those two lights ignite as if in their "off" states respectively. I can't launch safe mode because nothing comes up on the screen at all.

Sorry about that.
Please read before doing anything. Follow the Symptom: LED's glow, fan noise is heard, but display is black or blank.
