HP Pavilion DV7-1020EA
BIOS/CMOS updated to latest
Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Factory recovery performed again
All relevant HP update & Windows update installed
Adobe Flash & Sun Java installed
Bloatware removed
Tried MSConfig and turning off all Startup items with no improvement
Intel Centrino 2
Nvidia PureVideo HD Graphics
HDMI & eSATA
Problem: Booting into windows is OK a tad slow ish but loading the desktop once there it takes ages to load before being able to get on with anything. Like you cannot connect to the web till the desktop has loaded. I don't think its something in the System Tray causing the delay loading.
Any suggestions what to try please.
Cheers
Steven.

Hi Steven,
One thing I always found that speeded up Vista a bit was to disable Indexing - if you want to try this, open windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Services, scroll down to find the entry 'Windows Search' then right click this and select Properties. In the 'Startup type' dropdown box, select Disable then click Apply and Ok to save the change. This will not effect the ability to manually search for a file etc.
Restart the notebook for this change to take effect and see if it's helped at all.

Hi Steven,
You're welcome - I'd be interested in hearing if you find this makes the time it takes to get a 'usable' Vista any better.
Best regards,
DP-K

Hello
I tried that suggestion and found the time to boot to the Vista 64 bit Dektop a lot quicker. Though the loading of the actuall desktop once there is still a issue.
The problem is once to the Desktop picture there is a heafty time consuming 3 - 3.5min delay before being able to carry out a task. Currently running MemTest86+
Thanks for callign back !
Best Regards & Thanks U
Steven

Hi Steven,
Another option to check would be to disable the sidebar, then reboot and see if there's any difference. A guide on Disabling/Enabling Vistas sidebar is on the following link.
http://malektips.com/windows_vista_sidebar_0002.ht
It may also be wise to run a test on the HDD as follows.
Shut down the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive. Post back with the details of any error messages.

Hello DP-K
I have run a Memory Test and it passed fine with MemTest.
The delays seem to be holding up the loading of the Lan connection before it possible to connect to the router. Even dissabled the Lan and tried wireless give the same issue before being able to connect via wireless
The Sidebar is shutdown. I had run the HP HDD diagnostic under windows but not via the BIOS so will do this and report back later.
Been called out with a few jobs and might not be back till this evening. I will post back with the HDD result. Any other ideas are welcome.
Is it possible to turn off the items listed under the Services Tab from within the Msconfig Run option ? to fault find. one item at a time unchecked maybe ?
Appreciate you help and Thank You again. if you don't have the time to call back later untill next week, enjoy the weekend
Best Regards
Steven.

Hi Steven,
Good to hear from someone else in the UK - I live in the Cotswolds ![]()
Regarding troubleshooting Services, you could launch the System Configuration window, click the Services tab, put a tick in the box next to 'Hide all Microsoft services' and then remove the ticks from all the remaining entries. Click Apply and Ok, then reboot the notebook.
If it does load better, you'll have to re-enable one service at a time, apply this and reboot so it may be a little time consuming.

Hello DP-K
Ok, I ran the HDD short & Long test in the BIOS and it passed fine.
I am working on rebooting and enabling one item a time in the Svs Tab. Will post back when I have either found the culprit or completed the list.
Cheers and thank you for sticking with me !
Swap you for the Cotswolds ! is the weather any better than Cheshire, Rain, Rain & more Rain with More rain to follow.![]()
