HP DV7 1130us doesn't start - stays on black screen

OK, this is driving me insane. My laptop stays on a black screen, the lights by the speakers turn on and stay on and the fan turns on as well. To keep this post as short as possible, I tested and know that the RAM, monitor, and hard drive is not the problem. Also, the OS / virus is not the problem. I have also tried everything in the troubleshooting section...

Prior to the laptop not starting, for about a month or so it was taking really long to startup, but once it did, it worked perfectly fine. The lights by the caps lock and the other button on the top right of the keyboard constantly blink, and they were constantly blinking when the laptop was taking long to start.

 This leads me to believe that something on the motherboard is damaged or possibly (though i doubt it) the battery/power supply not providing enough power (saw it somewhere online). I know that I got a warning that the battery should be replaced when the problem began, and now the battery is completely dead. I should note that my laptop is plugged in 99% of the time.

So is it possible that the battery needing to be replaced / power supply not providing enough power anymore could cause this problem (note:the light next to the power supply turns on and it's the original that came with the laptop)? Any other steps I could take to try to solve this problem? Does it sound like some motherboard problem or something else?

I have Windows 7, I didn't install anything new prior to the problem, and again it's an HP DV7 1130us.

Thanks any help would be tremendously appreciated; I am desperate and haven't had the time to take it to a repair shop (and would like to avoid it).

Have you connected an external display to see if you can see your notebook booting into Windows?

If not, connect an external display , remove the battery ,plug in your exteral power adapter and press the power button.

I have, it gave me no signal. I have done it with and without the battery and with and without the the power supply with no luck.

The power adapter could be faulty.

Do you have access to another power adapter?

I have tried to find one but haven't found one that fits, hope a repair shop lets me use one; otherwise I need to buy one.

I would hope that was the problem, but the white light where I connect the power adapter does turn on. Could it still be faulty if that's the case?

Yes. It could still be faulty.

Is your dv7 notebook still in warranty?

No, the warranty has long expired...

I'll try to get a hold of a power adaptor hopefully by tonight and hope that it solves the problem. I'll update the situation later.

If it doesn't work, I would guess that it is indeed some problem with the motherboard...

Try checking the battery. Through some trial and error I discovered that the battery needed replacement after three plus years of use. Try rebooting via power off/on with battery removed. May have to mess with it a few times but mine finally came back to life. Ordered a reasonably priced nonHP replacement on Amazon that's supposed to have a longer battery life of around 3 hours.

Well it maybe something more than the battery as I'm still waiting for the replacement battery to arrive and when I went to use the laptop tonight it is experiencing the original symptoms again with a hang with a back screen and flashing caps lock and num lock lights. :-(
