Re: HP G42 Brand New...Oh and constant lockups!

Hey,

I'm running Norton though I believe it's expired. I had a feeling the anti-virus had something to do with it, but now I'm not so sure. One thing I have noticed since posting earlier- the problem tends to be much more constant when plugged in to a power source. When running on battery I hardly notice the issue, but once it's plugged in the lockups seem unavoidable. Perhaps you're on to something with trying to get a system restore disc from HP. Keep us posted.

Thanks.

Hi,

u need latest drivers. Laptop was shipped with Win 7 & all drivers are 1 year old.

So..let windows update run and update to Win 7 SP1 and all necessary updates..

then go to hp site..

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5042...

download and install the corresponding drivers.

Mine works fine up to now.

U may also need to cross check with the hardware manufacture site as well

hth

Re: HP G42 Brand New...Oh and constant lockups!

I have the same problem - I'm no expert at all - but I think it has to do with HP Support Assistant - I get locked up almost every time it is running........as an experiment I have removed the program. Already have done updates and a reinstallation.....

Re: HP G42 Brand New...Oh and constant lockups!

Hello DonGrafton,

Pls let me know the updates after you fixed your own method.

I haven't updated this thread after I fixed some stuff on that system.

Although all the drivers are updated (as I mentioned above), my system still frozen.

Even fresh installation, it was frozen. And also without HP Assistant.

The main reason might be OS accessing HardDisk and take all priority during that read & write.

Actually processor is not that much busy. You can take a look at the performance monitor.

Only HD was fully access at that time and you will see the HD Lights was fully on.

So currently what I did was turn off System Restore Feature in System Protection.

I just turned off All Protection Setting and then it mitigated the issue.

But the user said the issue was still there but with less occurance.

Let me know if you have updates.

Re: HP G42 Brand New...Oh and constant lockups!

I have just accepted that this machine is complete piece of crap and waste of my time. HP, you need to step up your game. I will NOT be buying another HP computer. I've switched back to Lenovo and as always it runs perfectly. No brand new machine should operate as poorly as that HP laptop does. Plain and simple.

Bought a G62 series and had problems with it from the minute I unpacked it. Freeze up even in safe mode. Sent it in for repair. They claimed nothing was wrong. Repeated complaints and no resolution to the complaints or the issue. One month after the warranty expired the motherboard went out. I took it to an independent repairman who warned me he personally had  worked on several HP laptops with bad motherboards. Apparently mine shipped out with one, and NO diagnostic program detected the problem. Also, from the way he talked, it was fairly common knowledge that the motherboards HP used in his word "sucks." So, to make a long story even longer, I junked out the HP and spent a little more money and bought a Toshiba Satellite and no problems. I will NEVER buy another HP product and warn everyone I can to save their money and /or sanity and buy any other name brand laptop. Add on : I bought my G62-340US in Nov 2010. I did every scan known to mankind. I got a set of recovery discs from HP and re-installed everything. I installed a "clean" copy of Windows 7 and same results. The indie tech told me if you run scans with a bad motherboard, the problem probably won't show up. The only way to check the mb is to remove the motherboard and test it separately. BIOS scans, Windows error checking, HP scans, and any other scan will be useless.

You all are right.

Previously, I admire HP Product.

But after I bought that laptop..my mind is totally changed now.

I'll double think of buying cheap laptop from HP.

Even I consider it ...I'll buy best one from HP, if it is better than Mac Book Air :smileyhappy:.

But I am shifting to Apple Ecosystem.

So bye bye PC.

Re: HP G42 Brand New...Oh and constant lockups!

Update:

I still have not bought the updated Windows disc, but I believe it will fix all the problems.  I downloaded Ubuntu (a freeware Operating System) and it runs flawlessly.  There has not been a single lockup and I've been runnign it for months on this OS.   This means that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the hardware, it is in the installation of Windows.

If I quit procrastinating, I'll order the Windows disc directly from HP.  If someone else beats me to it, let us know if it worked.

BTW:  I love ubuntu.  If you aren't married to Windows, go check out their website.  There's a download link that will automatically create a Dual-Boot system with Ubuntu as the second boot option.  I'm learning Linux now and it's sooo much better than the DOS base of Windows.  Plus, most software for it is free.
