I've had my G72 for just under a year now but pretty much since I've had it it seems to have an overheating problem it has been bearable but is now becoming increasingly annoying. Even watching a single youtube video becomes a chore, waiting for it to 'cool down' watching a little more of it, repeat, etc etc.
And once it overheats sometimes It won't come back for upto 10 minutes.
I use the laptop mostly on my desk and, of recent, proped up on books for as much air as possible with a fan underneath but it still over heats and the entire system slows downand lags.
I've had a look through all the support topics etc and not found much help.
I saw a note on the product support page for this model about a chipset issue but my laptop doesn't have even a similar serial or the same series chipset.
I'm sure I still have my receipt and even the box for this, should I return it to point of purchase or what should I be doing?

i bought mine in july 2010. In january, my computer started shocking me everytime I touched it. It got increasingly worse until it actually hurt. HP said I fried my motherboard by using it as a LAPtop and tried to blame it on me. Anyway, they shipped out a box for the computer and i shipped it to them for almost 2 weeks. After that I tried to keep it cooled but as of last month, I started getting shocks again. Great computer huh?
Anyway, the point is: contact HP asap before your one year warrenty is up, otherwise its cheaper to buy a new computer.
If you (and I) get a new computer, look at the intake and exhaust vents and make **bleep** sure they dont put them on the friggen bottom! Cause once in a while, I'll burn myself just opening the **bleep** thing.

This Forum is run by Volunteers, some of which do work for HP and the Majority of whom do not. Regardless, If you've been using the laptop for over a year it's likely very dirty on the inside...
Many times a laptop overheating is directly related to the cooling of the processor. The main culprit is the fan. The fan sucks in air from the bottom and blows it out the side. It will also suck in hair, dust, and other debris. That stuff often gets trapped by the heat sink and over time builds up in a layer which chokes off the cool air going to the processor making the fan work harder.

What I recommend is getting some canned air and blowing out the vents in the side and bottom of the laptop. If after doing this you still have problems with over-heating, and your laptop is in warranty, you can take your laptop to a HP Authorized Service Center and ask them to clean the fan and heatsink. You can check your warranty here:
If it is out of warranty, consider searching for the maintenance manual for your specific model, in the manual there are schematics for taking apart the laptop. Cleaning the fan is much easier that removing a motherboard, so don't feel to intimidated by the idea. Also you can remove the heatsink and then remove the thermal grease and apply a new layer which also helps alleviate heat related issues.

I feel so let down. I have been buying HP products for several years. Towers, laptops, printers etc... I have always put my trust and money in HP. Now all I have is this G72 that over heated a lost all my important info., programs, pictures and files. At this point I can not afford another. It is quite obvious that there is a significant problem with over heating. I have already taken mine apart to clean but there was nothing to clean. it was already free of dust and hair etc... It seems the only option for this former HP consumer is to no longer buy one. Then temporarily borrow a computer to share info with consumer agencies and spread the word with social media to help prevent others from experiencing the same frustrations. My preference would be that HP fix the one I have correctly instead. PS I was informed that if you do choose to clean it yourself because your warranty has expired, it is important to lightly hold the fan from spinning when using compressed air cleaning products. If not the fan could spin too fast and burn up the fan bearings. Thought I would share

And for those of us having overheating issues after 5 months? I don't think it's a dirt issue. I think it's the way the computer is built. I find that if I give the laptop a lift it seems to help a bit. I have been keeping a lift on it and a fan blowing on the vent and have had no further problems...a bit of the pain in the rear but it does the trick until I get my next laptop which I'm pretty certain won't be an HP.

It seems a design fault with hp computers and when I spoke to the main repair centre in london teh guy did acknowledge they know ofthe problem, I use 6 fans underneath and 2 on top which seems to do the job, they cost a quid in poundland,
The est cost of repairing the fan was 220 pounds, so my advice dont buy Hp, unless you can afford a new computer every 2 years

Well I finally fix the problem with G72-b10em notebook pc.... I downgraded on Windows Xp and it's working. I Instal legacy drivers and disable hardware acceleration on graphic card. Sad but true, but I'm running Windows xp on this strong machine.
