HP Pavilon dv9500 Blue Screen of Death, now only white bar and screen that fades to black

My wife's HP Pavilion 9500 was slowing down.  2 days ago it started the blue screen of death with error messages, then auto rebooted.  Restarted in Safe Mode and started uploading all important files to external drive.  Also started running Norton to locate faults.  The screen went black.  Rebooted, only black screen.  Now it starts up with a white bar across top (looks like compressed screen display).  Sometimes it starts up with off-white screen (full size).  In both cases the light area then starts to look like a piece of paper with fire behind it and slowly goes dark.  I connnected an external monitor, the monitor could see the computer but not recieve a display.  I tried to use function keys to activate external display with no success.

 

Any suggestions?
