Every time I try to manage my log-ins I'm asked for a disk. I've never had a disk the software was preinstalled.

Hi Mark,
If this is a new issue, then try the following to set it to rights:
Hard Reset:
Sometimes all you need to do is kick the computer. This method works for a variety of connection and ‘stuck’ program issues.
- Disconnect all external devices first.
- Remove AC power and the battery
- Press and hold power button for at least 30 seconds
- Reinstall only AC power for first startup ** See Note
- Power on - Log in
- Next time you shut down the system, reinstall battery.
** Note: If time is short, reinstall battery the first time and be done with it.

If the Reset does not fix it, then we will need more information.
Please provide your exact Product Number and Operating System (Windows 7, 32/64bit, etc)

The “Hard Reset” didn’t work; I tried it twice just to make sure I was doing it correctly. I’m having this problem with two software applications, HP SimplePass Identity Protection and Windows Live Photo Gallery. Both applications were preinstalled when I purchased my laptop and have worked well for the past year (my HP Pavilion dv7 notebook, Product # XH108UA#SBA, running Windows 7, Service Pack 1, 64 bit is two years old). I’m also running Norton 360 so I don’t think the notebook was compromised.
I’ve documented both occurrences with more detail:
Where launching Windows Live Photo Gallery a window pops up.
- Heading on the window: WLXPhotoGallery.exe – No Disk
- Contents within the window: There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive\Device\Harddisk1\DR1.
- Three buttons “Cancel”, “Try Again” and “Continue”
- I hit cancel twice and the window disappears
When launching HP SimplePass Identity Protection a window pops up
- Heading: DPUserConsole.exe – No Disk
- Contents within the window: There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive\Device\Harddisk1\DR1.
- Three buttons “Cancel”, “Try Again” and “Continue”
- I hit cancel five times and the window disappears.
In both cases I’ve lost some functionality with each application.
I’m puzzled because my notebook runs like a dream; it’s smooth, fast and I have no complaints. What do you think is happening? Any ideas? Thanks

Hi Mark,
I do not think the two programs are at fault. I think this error is coming from elsewhere.
The error message, I believe at this time, is hugely annoying and probably harmless.
- Do you have QuickBooks installed on that notebook now (or in the recent past)?
If yes, is it possible to remove the program without removing whatever records you might have that you require for bookkeeping purposes?
If no, then what other "auxiliary" programs do you have on the system that might fall into a similar category to QuickBooks?
Thanks...

Hi Dragon-Fur,
It’s puzzling and hugely annoying. No, I don’t have QuickBooks. I run Outlook and iTunes and that’s really about it.
Would reinstalling the operating system fix it? I hate the thought of doing it because it’s a painful process and there’s no guarantee.

Mark,
Yeah, I think reinstalling would fix it...
EDIT:
IF the issue did not come back:
If the issue is due to a program on the system generating the error, and you reinstall that program AND the registry responds in the same way... then the error could return.
I asked about QuickBooks because I found a reference to this exact error referencing QuickBooks from Intuit. The posts were from a couple of years back and some of the back and forth on it made me think that this is either a software bug or a possible infection.
Right now, I still vote for software bug or file system corruption... less nasty and may be easier to pry out of the system. (Much more likely, too.) I do wonder about the source. It is an unusual little beast.
- Do you have two (or more disks) on that notebook?
- Have you added an external disk lately?
- Have you added (plugged in) a USB stick / flash drive (that you have not removed)? If yes, what is on that USB drive? (Not in detail..Just in general - what's on the drive?)
- Have you recently added a NAS to the network? Brand? What is the NAS used for? Backups? Web Server?
- Have you changed the Drive Letters on the system recently?
Something useful to do:
Start this (if you have time, it would take a bit to run)... just let it go. Do not worry about the log this, copy that, and watch that bits. Unless there are issues, it will run to completion by itself. If there are parts that the system cannot "fix", it will let you know - THEN you can get involved and do whatever it says. There's a help file at the end.
==================================================
sfc-scannow
Scan and repair the system. The sfc /scannow command will do that - it will scan the operating system, looking for corrupted files and inconsistencies; it will replace and repair whatever it can. If it finds corrupted programs or libraries, it will try to fix them.
- Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Right-Click Command Prompt > Select 'Run as Administrator'
- In the Command Prompt Window, type (or copy / paste) sfc /scannow and press Enter.
(Note the space between sfc and the "/".)
The sfc scan will report its findings and you can examine the results:
- Open a Command Prompt (does not have to be as Administrator):
- Use the copy command to create a readable file copy of the output:
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\desktop\cbs.txt
If “scannow” does not complete properly, try running:
sfc /verifyonly
Copy the results into a text file, pull the output file into Notepad and look for the errors that the full Scan could not fix.
Help File for the System File Checker Command:
System File Checker tool Windows Vista or on Windows 7
Using System File Checker (SFC) to Restore System Files
==================================================
EDIT:
One of the fixes I read about is to rename the Drive Letter for a secondary drive on the system. This might work - it did work for one user, did not work for another (as posted). Renaming the Drive Letter changes the way the system recognizes the Drive but does not change the data or how the computer uses the data on the drive. It is a relatively benign change. It can affect backups and certain other programs - most of which can be fixed without too much trouble.
I hope this helps!
Good Luck!

Hi,
Let me answer your questions first and then I’ll tell you how the System File Checker worked.
• Do you have two (or more disks) on that notebook?
I believe it’s one. How would I know if I have two?
• Have you added an external disk lately?
No, not lately but I do use a Western Digital 500GB external hard drive. I keep it plugged in all the time so it continuously is backing up my data. I don’t keep my important stuff on the notebook because if had crashes with other notebooks. FYI – I unplug everything when doing maintenance and anything you’re suggesting. I’m also shopping for a new external and thinking of the HP 1T.
• Have you added (plugged in) a USB stick / flash drive (that you have not removed)? If yes, what is on that USB drive? (Not in detail..Just in general - what's on the drive?)
No, I only plug in a stick if I’m using it and follow the proper protocol when ejecting.
• Have you recently added a NAS to the network? Brand? What is the NAS used for? Backups? Web Server?
No, I’m not using an NAS. I am using Norton 360 but not the backup feature to their server; it’s turned off and directed to my external drive.
• Have you changed the Drive Letters on the system recently?
No. I did a year ago when my ipod couldn’t make a connection but I think I changed it back. How could a letter change on a USB port cause a problem (just curious)?
Now for the System File Check! I disconnected everything (printer, speakers, and my external drive), ran the check and it came up clean “Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”
So it’s back to the drawing board. LOL

Hi Mark,
The Drive Letter change was suggested as a means of eliminating that error. I am not sure whether it would work... as mentioned earlier, changing the Drive Letter for one of the connected devices did work in one case - not in another.
You'd know if you bought your computer with a second disk... It would be a second "data" disk - not the "Recovery" partition, not the "HP_Tools" partition - a real second disk of it's own that shows up in Computer. No worries.
I have not seen this "HDR1" error on any of my systems and only just started reading about it. I suspect that you've stumbled on a program bug and now it's buried in the registry. I think that is why in some cases the change to the Drive Letter works and in others it does not - it depends, for one thing, what this "IS" - and it depends on where the actual registry error is located. I do not understand Windows registries, but I do understand programming. One can sometimes fix or break things by doing something that appears totally unrelated.
This could be some sort of Infection. What I have read suggests this is not the case. I have read very little of what is out there. See my note about Norton... Then know this - just because I don't like Norton, does not mean I think it failed. I do not think at this point that your computer is infected.
I think reinstalling the OS would fix it. I am just not sure the fix would "stick". I do not know where the issue originated - so whatever you did to cause it in the first place could be repeated (not deliberately, of course) - Poof! The error could return. Not to say, you won't end up reinstalling ... It makes sense to try other "less painful" options first.
Commentary:
I am not directly familiar with Western Digital backup tools... I've read the usual. I have one of the HP 1T backup boxes - I do not uses the HP software; the box just sits connected USB 3.0 as a auxiliary disk: I use it with SyncToy 2.1 for daily backups. The HP box has been reliable so far (about eight months). We use a Synology NAS Server for network backups that we like very well. I use Cobian Backup 10 for the Windows systems to talk to that one. Not fancy, but it is fast enough, free, really easy to use, reliable, and it emails me log files. What more can one ask?
I am not a fan of Norton. I do not have Norton on any of the several computers in my Home Office. I cannot comment on its use.
--------------------------------------------------
EDIT ... 5/7 11:19 p.m.
Option 1:
"Go Back in Time"
You didn't say how long this has been going on... If the error is relatively new, that is, it has not been around for a long time, it might make sense to see if you can get rid of it by going back to a time when you did not see it on the computer - stepping back, so to speak.
Using "System Restore" can take your computer back to any point at which a restore point was created. Restore points are created by the system when updates are added, when programs are installed or changed, and when "Restore Points" are scheduled by the user(s) of the computer. Only the computer's programs and data are affected by a System Restore; the user's personal data and files are not changed.
Restoring Windows to a Previous Point (Windows 7) – HP and Compaq Computers
For Vista:
Using Microsoft System Restore – Notebooks – Vista and Windows 7
If you do not have System Restore enabled... Oh, well, no time like the present to get it set up for next time. ![]()
end of edit...
==================================================
Option 2:
IF this error can be cured by changing the Drive letter on, say, the Western Digital connection, then that is a place to start.
Option 2:
IF this "bug" insinuated itself into the registry entries of just two of the programs of your system, then you might cure it by reinstalling those two programs.
Option 3:
IF this "whatever it is" is a general registry error, then you MIGHT be able to dig it out with a Registry Cleaner. I used to be more of an advocate of registry cleaners than I am at present. I have had limited success with cleaners - it seems that the more desparate your need, the less likely they are to succeed.
Nonetheless, I will give you the link of a cleaner that I trust to work as well as any and the one that I believe will not damage your computer.
Tools List:
Registry Cleaner – CCleaner (Download the free version):
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
NOTE about using CCleaner: IF you use the Applications cleaner tab in CCleaner (this is a separate section from the registry cleaner), be sure to check/uncheck the program list or CCleaner might remove things you may want to keep.
NOTES on Registry Cleaners:
Registry cleaners will usually do no harm – however, anytime you affect the registry with changes, you risk your system’s stability. CCleaner does include the offer to make a backup of your registry prior to making any changes.
If you select to download and install another registry cleaner, please uninstall CCleaner. One of these things on the system at a time is enough…
If a registry Cleaner does not offer to do a backup prior to making changes: be sure you EXPORT the registry manually PRIOR to using the cleaner. If anything happens that you don’t expect, you will have an extra layer of protection on which to fall back.
IMO: Stay away from Registry Mechanic. I have had this on my systems – it has been cleansed, removed, deleted, and dropped in the Zeros bucket. This is a Personal Opinion.

I hope this helps!

Hi Dragon-Fur,
Although my problem is still there, the information you’ve given so far has been helpful and I’m grateful. Even if I have to live with it, at least I know I’m giving it a try.
One thing I am going to try is uninstalling Windows Live Essentials and then reinstalling it and seeing if that error is resolved. I don’t think I can do that with HP Simple Pass; I just might have to live with it until it becomes unmanageable then resort to reinstalling the operating system. I’ve never had to do it and it sounds like a nightmare. The uninstall / reinstall of Live Essentials is easy and could give me more insight into a bigger problem if the error comes back. Your thoughts?
As far as Anti-virus software’s they are all the same from what I can see. Norton seems like it’s doing the job but I’m no expert. I don’t use Norton to clean my registry; I like Clary Utilities. Yeah, it’s a freebie but they update it frequently and the notebook runs fast. Could Clary be the source of my problem? Who knows?
I too thought of going back in time using a Restore Point but I don’t remember when the problem actually started with Simple Pass. The application works well until I try to manage my logins, that’s when the errors pop. I’ve also notice, if I have multiple logins for a site, it won’t work and I have to enter the password manually. It’s getting messy but I’m not at my breaking point yet.
I’m still researching external hard drives. Many of them come with software to manage backups but since I have Norton managing that, it’s less important. At this point I’m looking for the most bang for the buck and in this case approximately fifty dollars per terabyte. I’ve found a Western Digital 2TB of $100. One thing that does bother me about externals is their reliability. My current 500GB has worked well for years and I’m going to keep it around for a few months before I move files to a new one. I’m so paranoid of disk failure with a new product. I use the 30/60/90 day rule with electronics; if it doesn’t explode by then it’s a keeper.
I’ll drop you a line in a few days and let you how the reinstall of Live Essentials went and if the problem has reoccurred. At least I will have established a baseline and be able to keep my eye on it for changes and then move forward.

Hi Mark,
You sound like you have a plan. I like the fact that you are willing to poke at this at bit to see if you can find and fix the problem. Classic troubleshooting. Smiling. You may end up reinstalling the OS - we have all done this with hands in the air - no use in going that road before you have tried a couple of things.
Digital Persona
I finally went in and checked your system model - you are actually using Digital Persona... HP calls this SimplePass just to confuse things and they did buy the rights to it... but IMO, this is not SimplePass, it is Digital Persona with the SimplePass name slapped on it. Smiling.
Whether one runs SimplePass or DP is hardware specific. Some models run one; other computers run the other. Has to do with what was available when the box was built. They do not mix.
Digital Persona is tough. The version that you are running may not be as tough as the older one, but DP is sturdy stuff - you can beat it up pretty bad and it will come back. You can reinstall DP, you can reinstall the Validity Sensor Driver (both of these are at your computer's website). You can stomp on it... it should still work. I run DP 4.x on my HDX18t - love DP. I run SimplePass 2012 on a dv7t - it's OK, too - but it is fussy software and prone to breakage.
Before you do anything weird with DP, be sure you Export that database.
Export the DP Database / Make a Backup:
Start/Open Digital Persona > scan your fingerprint to open > Online Accounts > Manage >
See Import and Export > Select Export
> Export online account data from this computer >
Scan your fingerprint > type your password >
Browse to your selected folder > type in a name > Finish
Keep the Export file safe. Re-export on a regular basis. If you have to reinstall your software, you will be able to use this file to restore your passwords.
REMEMBER:
- Validity Sensor Driver controls the fingerprinter - Install drivers FIRST
- Digital Persona (SimplePass) software controls the Password Database - install software SECOND
There is help for reinstalling Digital Persona if/when you need it.... You should be OK as long as you Export the database, and remember that Order of Events matters (Drivers first, Software second).
--------------------------------------------------
Big Fat Windows Essentials
Yeah, I don't think Norton did this... Could have been Windows Essentials, though. No offense to Windows Live or Windows "anything", but it's a big, fat, wobbly, bit of code... who knows what it dragged in with it. This is especially true if you have the whole "Essentials" suite of programs on the system. It's only about 53MB (??) as I recall, but it's a bunch of "stuff". Smiling.
--------------------------------------------------
Windows Restore
Restore Points are pretty easy... you could try a couple. They work a lot better in Safe Mode, though, with everything disconnected and nothing else going on. It might work... if it came back again, you'd have a pretty good "window" of what is going on this time... your "paranoid" radar will be pretty high for a while after this. :-)
--------------------------------------------------
Backups - When is it Enough?
I used to obsess over buying new external drives until I just had to have more space... then I just decided to buy enough servers / disks for the home network that my failure rate would not likely exceed my level of paranoia. Simple. One term is "acceptable level of risk". There are other, less flattering terms for this kind of backup-obsession. All of us Ex-IT people are all a little nuts, IMO. Bwa-ha-ha-ha... So, if you don't like the new WD enough to trust it, buy another one of a different kind - put it on the network... get some free software for the backups and have THOSE backups run at a different time of the night / day. Easy.
--------------------------------------------------
Good Luck!
