Laptop worked fine last night and when I went to turn it on this morning, I noticed it wouldn't boot up past the black screen with the progress bar that says Microsoft Corporation. I held the power button to turn it off and waited a few minutes to turn it back on. When it turned on, the Windows error recovery screen came up asking if you'd like to start windows normally OR launch start up repair (recommended). So I chose the start up repair. When I did, the black screen with the progress bar and Microsoft Corporation comes up, and then a blue screen comes up with a window that says start up repair: your computer was unable to start, start up repair is check for problems- with a progress bar, under which says checking disc for errors- this may take over an hour to complete. It finishes, and says press finish to shut down your computer. I press finish, it shuts down. I press the power button, it turns on, and still doesn't boot up past the black screen with Microsoft Corporation and progress bar. I've done this about 6-7 times so far and it still wont get to the home screen where I can actually use the computer. This is bizarre. Please help!

Hi,

Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( usually f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.

Note:  If the option to run these tests is not available in the Bios Menu, use the f2 diagnostic menu instead.

Can you also post back with the following details.

1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information.

2.  The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 64bit ).

Regards,

Model number: I'm assuming is hp pavilion dv6000
Product number: GA405UA#ABA
Running Vista

Tapped esc key while it started up and a black screen with text came up for about 2seconds, I saw the word BIOS and then it went right to the black windows error recovery screen, allowing me to choose launch start up repair, or start windows normally.

Hi,

In that case, try tapping f10 as soon as you start and see if this opens the bios menu directly.

I was able to run the primary hard disk self test first, and the test status was 100% passed. Quick passed, comprehensive passed, s.m.a.r.t. Passed. Now how do I get back to the screen with the two options for primary hard disk self test and memory test: esc = exit, f10 = save and exit, f5/f6 = change values

I was able to run the memory text, and it passed 100%. So I pressed f10 to save and exit, and the computer shut down and restarted. It still didn't make it passed the black screen with Microsoft Corporation and progress bar. Anything else I can try?
