HP pavilion dv6 freezes upon loading, and only works on safe mode

hi everyone, well i have a hp pavilion dv6 laptop sitting next to me right now, which is able to turn on but then freezes and all icons (e.g. internet, startuup button) are frozen. The mouse does work, but everything else doesn't. Safe mode does work though.

does anyone have any idea what this might be caused by? and just to let you know, i am exceptionally slow with computers (and anything related to technology), so the dumber your explanation sounds, the better :smileytongue: thankyou!

Re: HP pavilion dv6 freezes upon loading, and only works on safe mode

Hi,

Boot in to Safe Mode.  When loaded,  Hold down the Windows button and press R.  Into the Run Box type msconfig and hit return.  Click on the Start Up tab a remove the tick by each start up program.  Click Apply and restart your PC, letting Windows start normally.

Post back with whether this helps, as we can then start re-enabling one Start Up item at a time to identify the problem.

Best wishes,

DP-K

hey DPK, thanks, but this hasn't worked. I've actually tried this before (and again now) but it doesn't change anything, it still freezes after loading :smileyfrustrated:

Re: HP pavilion dv6 freezes upon loading, and only works on safe mode

Hi again,

Boot in to Safe Mode again and from the Start Menu, click All Programs, Accessories.  Right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the Command Prompt, type the following command and hit return.

sfc /scannow                  ( Note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit return.  Reboot your PC.

Let me know how you get on.

Best wishes,

DP-K

Re: HP pavilion dv6 freezes upon loading, and only works on safe mode

Hi David and Marie,

David is right on the money with his suggestion. I too have a similar problem on my dv4-1114nr laptop. I have Vista home premium. Programs dont startup and the system freezes but the mouse works. The vista hourglass (blue circle) keeps on running non stop. So I went into msconfig in safe mode and disabled all the startup services and it didn't freeze and was working fine. So, my issue is now with the startup programs. I made a note of all the programs and started enabling them 5 at a time. Finally only the Microsoft windows operating system programs were left and one MS Office OneNote. When I enable any of the MS windows OS programs, it freezes within a few minutes of restarting in normal mode. So its definitely these that are causing the problem. Also there is  another program in the startup which says manufacturer unknown. Its name  is '94593131'. I think this is a virus. I have it left  unchecked and unenabled. I'm too scared to delete it unless I know for sure its a virus. I am now at a roadblock. Dont quite know what to do now. For the moment, I have these 5 unenabled and the system is working fine. But the mute quickstart button is now red. I think if I download the audio drivers it might go away but didn't try it sofar. I had this red button issue a year ago too. Marie see if you can uncheck all the startup programs and then see if it works. I was in a hurry so I just glanced over your (Marie's) post.

Any help would be appreciated guys!:smileyhappy:

Thanks in advance.

Re: HP pavilion dv6 freezes upon loading, and only works on safe mode

Hi,

On the link below is a brief guide ( and the download ) to create a bootable Antivirus disk.  Create this disk on another PC and when done, start the infected PC so that you can open the DVD drive, insert the Antivirus CD you've created and then restart the infected PC to initiate the process.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
