I have a Windows 8 Hp laptop its two months old. I closed the screen last night (without shutting down) and this morning it won't work. The laptop sounds as if its starting up but the screen goes grey. If I press F11 it will say F11.....Systems Recovery but can't do anything else. I have tried taking out the battery and holding the in button down for one minute but nothing happened. As a student this lappy is my life.

Hi Hannah82,

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Notebook and getting a blank or black screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. This terminates any process that is open and causing issues.

Hope this is helpful.

 Thanks.

Thank you for your reply.  I tried the suggestions but nothing worked.  The screen is still grey.  Is there anything else I could try?
